Üsküdar University: Where career-ready, future-ready engineers are made

The digital revolution is upon us, and the engineering field is at the forefront of this transformation. Concepts like Industry 4.0 and smart manufacturing demand engineers who can adapt and thrive in this evolving landscape. Üsküdar University, located in Istanbul, Turkey, is positioned to prepare students for this future.

Founded by the esteemed psychiatrist Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan, Üsküdar University is home to the Faculty of Engineering and Natural Sciences, which equips students with the skills and knowledge they need to succeed. Their modern, practical, cost-effective programmes emphasise hands-on learning, ensuring students can simulate their future workplace and hit the ground running when they graduate.

Üsküdar University provides its engineering students with the tools essential for their success. In addition to the programmes offered for students to specialise in high-demand fields such as cybersecurity, artificial intelligence, and engineering management, the university also provides cutting-edge applied computer laboratories, establishing a strong foundation in practical applications.

Pair that with professors with extensive research experience and you’ll have a comprehensive learning experience. The university has a distinguished faculty, as evidenced by the awards bestowed upon Prof. Dr. Türker Tekin Ergüzel. His achievements, including the B-Global Neuroscience Leadership Award and the ECNS Presidential Service Award, highlight the calibre of expertise students can expect to encounter at Üsküdar University.

With their guidance, you can enhance your learning and future career prospects by participating in active research programmes, including artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, and robotics. State-of-the-art facilities, featuring modern labs, equipment, and resources, further empower you to undertake more advanced projects, propelling you towards a successful career in engineering.

Üsküdar University’s Software Engineering programme equips you with the necessary skills to develop software solutions. The programme emphasises user requirements, cost constraints, technical and economic feasibility, reliability, maintainability, and on-time delivery. You’ll not only gain a strong technological and engineering foundation but also develop crucial communication and management skills, preparing you for success in leading complex projects.

From the first semester, you’ll engage in hands-on training alongside introductory courses, allowing you to solidify your theoretical understanding. This practical approach continues throughout the programme, with courses like Data Structures, Object Oriented Programming, and Database Management Systems all featuring applied components. As the programme is interdisciplinary, you’ll combine computer science and engineering principles with mathematics, economics, business, and social sciences.

To further enhance student learning, Üsküdar University offers a variety of specialised labs such as Mac Laboratory, Physics Laboratory, Neurotechnology and Bioinformatics Laboratory, and Neuromarketing Research Laboratory, ensuring you gain practical experience with relevant software and hardware. The result? You’ll graduate with the ability to confidently tackle real-world problems. Just ask Amir Mohammad Daoud Tawtah, a current student of Software Engineering who believes the emphasis on hands-on learning, coupled with faculty mentorship, promises a holistic academic experience.

“I believe that software engineering holds immense potential for the future, considering the ever-evolving technological landscape, and Üsküdar University’s programme seems well-positioned to prepare students for this dynamic field,” he says.

Omar Jamil Alrimawi, another Software Engineering student, agrees. He is impressed by the university’s proactive curriculum updates and industry collaborations. “I am confident that this programme offers the perfect blend of academic excellence, practical experience, and inclusivity, making it the ideal choice for my educational journey and future career aspirations,” he says.

The Department of Computer Engineering is just as experiential. Its curriculum encourages creative problem-solving in technology, medicine, and social issues, with applications across various disciplines.

Practical training begins in the second semester with courses like Introduction to Algorithms and Programming. These hands-on sessions are conducted in small groups within the Mac Laboratory or Computer Laboratory, allowing personalised instruction and focused learning. Courses like Data Structures and Object Oriented Programming provide further opportunities to apply theoretical knowledge in real-world scenarios — something student Miral Selmi can attest to. “I believe the programme’s emphasis on practical skills alongside theoretical knowledge will equip me to tackle real-world challenges effectively,” he says.

Beyond software, the programme delves into hardware as well. Courses like Logic Circuits, Electronic Circuits, and Microprocessors are conducted in specialised labs like the Digital Systems Laboratory and Electronic Circuits Laboratory.

A diverse range of elective courses, exceeding 25% of the curriculum, lets you choose from departmental electives, electives offered by other departments within the Faculty, social electives from various faculties, and even foreign language electives. This flexibility allows you to customise what you learn, expand your knowledge and develop a unique skillset that aligns with your career aspirations.

What’s more, you will gain real-world experience through two mandatory summer internships in the hardware and software fields. For those seeking international exposure, the ERASMUS programme is a chance to study or intern abroad, a great way to broaden your horizons and enrich your education.
