For Oluwaseun Ayodeji Osowobi, joining Swansea University’s Master of Arts (MA) in International Relations has been great for her career. Since graduating in 2012, she’s become an Obama Foundation Leader in Africa and won many awards — the most recent being British Council’s StudyUK Global Winner for Social Impact 2023.
Osowobi credits her successes to Swansea University. “The academic institution is super affordable, the teaching technique is great, and you get an invaluable academic experience tailored for your career growth,” she says.
“As an alumnus of the institution, I can authoritatively tell you that the relationship also does not end within the four walls of Swansea University. Swansea offers a wide range of undergraduate and postgraduate programmes. Our teaching is research-led and our academic staff have experience in theory and practice, which brings students up to speed with the expectations of industry and academia. This is further enhanced by experiential learning opportunities. For example, Economics, MSc students can apply for a work placement or internship through the Swansea Paid Internship Network (SPIN) or the Week of Work initiative. Whilst Education, BA (Hons) students can seek work placements in organisations such as schools, local authorities, businesses, and charities.
Early Childhood Studies with Early Years Practitioner Status, BA (Hons) student Ayan Ibrahim amassed of work placement time — loving every minute of it. “I enjoyed this because it gave me a chance to cement what I had learnt in lectures, as well as a chance to observe, and engage with different early years setting,” she says. “My professors were always alongside to guide and answer questions I had whilst on placement.”
Ibrahim benefited from guest lecturers who are from different professional sectors and hold diverse experiences in teaching in other countries. “It makes my learning feel more well-rounded,” she says.
This is made possible via Swansea Employability Academy (SEA), where students and graduates have access to career fairs, one-on-one consultations with industry experts, job opportunities, development courses, and much more. From the first day on campus, SEA puts a student’s learning and career development in tandem, with the aim of fully equipping them for the world of work.
SEA works like a one-stop centre for advice, events, and more. It offers confidential and impartial guidance to help you make choices about your education and career plans. It organises an annual flagship careers fair, confidence-building sessions, employer drop-ins, and events for every stage of every career journey. Its Graduate Support Programme provides continued careers and employability support to alumni. The Career Development Course has 16 units covering a variety of topics that can help you with your career planning and is available 24/7.
“SEA provides a variety of helpful services, including work experience, career advice, and interview preparation,” says American student Bethan Killeen, who’s pursuing a . “Swansea University has been the perfect choice for me regarding my course and the work-life balance I was looking for. It has great support services, friendly people, and is located next to a beautiful sandy beach.”
If students need more help from a professional, they can always apply for the Alumni Mentoring Scheme, where past graduates connect with current students to help with their career decisions. The programme is divided into two parts — Professional Mentoring for six months and Flash Mentoring for three months. Both focus on building a stand-out CV with tailored support and advice to give graduates a head start in the race towards employment.
There are other ways to get in touch with Swansea alumni, many of whom are thriving in well-known companies across different sectors. Through the Alumni Connect Platform, students and graduates can stay in touch and expand their network. Many professional opportunities have arisen from accessing this global network of 200,000 Swansea graduates — available by simply downloading the app.
Apart from the platform, students can access the university’s informal alumni international chapters via WhatsApp. Run by alumni for alumni, these social messaging groups are separated into countries, making communication more targeted and easier to run social events and seek advice from seniors in the know.
