Nurturing children’s futures: Two boarding schools share the same passion

Having the right opportunities can mean the world to children. As they grow and discover who they are, they seek out avenues to be the best versions of themselves, exploring their interests while navigating the troughs of childhood. What better place to do that than school?

Having the right space to grow can make all the difference. A school with a well-equipped lab, theatre, art room, field, and more, is more than a mere physical space during this precarious period of growth. It’s where young minds and bodies take shape, discovering passions and aptitudes of who they can and want to be.

Ultimately, a bright future doesn’t lie in just state-of-the-art facilities alone. Having the right teachers and staff is crucial to transforming children into well-rounded graduates ready for college, life and beyond. Few schools achieve this — but in the US, two stand out for taking this ideal vision and coming real close to making it a reality:

The Boys’ Latin School of Maryland

Located on 72 rolling acres of countryside, The Boys’ Latin School of Maryland is an all-boys independent school with boarding geared to students in Grades 9-12. This is where every boy is known for who he is today and all he can be tomorrow. The small school and small boarding community is the perfect place for boys to grow in confidence and independence.

The Boys’ Latin School of Maryland Headmaster Chris Post encourages students to fully engage in all aspects of their education.

“Boys have opportunities to pursue their passions, discover new interests and receive world-class instruction from faculty members at the top of their fields,” says Headmaster Chris Post. “Boys are supported by a tight-knit community and discover friendships that last a lifetime,”

When boarding students talk about their experiences, it is the people and the close-knit relationships that are the difference. The small size is what makes that possible. What makes Boys’ Latin stand above the crowd are the enduring personal relationships forged here. “The best part of Boys’ Latin is the smallness of the school,” says student Lincoln (from Murrieta, CA). “I feel like I know everyone: all the faculty and all the students. It is such an amazing community. We will support each other and look out for each other”

You’ll see the same enthusiasm when it comes to academics. Here, day students and faculty members are passionate about helping boarders in study groups. It’s little wonder why 81% of graduates attend “Most Competitive” or “Highly Competitive” colleges, according to Barron’s Profiles of American Colleges.

Harry (from Yangor, Myanmar) reflects on the many opportunities Boys’ Latin provides and how teachers make a difference. “I am looking forward to taking high-level math electives, like multivariate calculus and statistics and probability. Because our teachers really know us and are interested in what we do, it enhances our learning experience.”

Boarding at Boys’ Latin would not be complete without its arts, athletics and robotics programmes. Student-athletes get to compete at the highest level, following the school’s track record of fielding winning teams. Members of the Lumberjacks robotics team you can design, build, and test robots and then go on to compete regionally, nationally and internationally. Students can also embrace creativity through music, theatre, visual and digital arts and video production.

Compassion, authenticity and independence – these are just some of the values that girls at Garrison Forest School (GFS) learn. GFS is a private, independent all-girls school that offers boarding from Grades 8 through 12. The 110-acre campus is conveniently located within a short drive to an airport and train station, and is about an hour’s drive from Washington, DC.

Here, boarders receive more than just care and support. Residential Life faculty and staff are ever-willing to support girls in navigating situations non-boarders might not encounter until college. But what makes GFS stand out is how studying and living here lights many sparks that lead to character development, global competency and wellness.

“I chose to study at GFS because the community felt very inclusive and friendly, and I felt like it was a very comfortable space for me to learn and develop my confidence,” shares student Emine.

A key resource that illustrates Garrison Forest’s approach to holistic student development is the newly announced Boyce Centre for Learning and Thriving, set to open in the fall of 2024, which builds on the school’s commitment to nurture the whole student and recognise each student’s individual brilliance. The Boyce Center unites the school’s already-strong Academic Resource, Counselling, and Health Centre teams, building on an approach to learning that considers the whole student, providing a place where students’ academic, social-emotional and physical wellness are interwoven. By meeting students where they are with tailored learning experience, the Boyce Centre aims to build resiliency and promote proactive wellness and long-term well-being. The Boyce Center builds on a strong curriculum that encourages girls to take on academic challenges. Take the Women in Science and Engineering (WISE) programme, for example. Here, young girls dive into their passion for STEM and get real-life, hands-on experience in a real lab at Johns Hopkins University under a professor or graduate student for a semester.

The setting for GFS’s innovative, safe and supportive boarding? A 110-acre campus – wooded, serene and conveniently located within a short drive to an airport and train station. It is about an hour’s drive from Washington, DC, about two hours from Philadelphia and about three hours from New York City.
