Located four hours north of Chicago, North Cedar Academy (NCA) is a private, international boarding school for students in grades nine to 12. The picturesque campus is situated on 96 acres overlooking the Flambeau River. The local community of Ladysmith — which is the largest city in Rusk County, Wisconsin) — has a cosy population of 3,100 with a crime rate that is 75% below national average.
“That places us in a really nice rural setting, where we embrace nature and take on our environmental capacity to provide you with the best learning environment possible,” says Mike Lovorn, Headmaster and Executive Director. “We are, according to Niche and other outlets, one of the best boarding schools in the US. We are pleased to provide for you an extraordinarily multicultural setting in which you will develop as a global citizen and a scholar.”
Keeping up to date with the latest pedagogy is a priority for NCA. The school does this by integrating technology on campus as well incorporating makerspaces. “Boarding schools are places where students should have room to explore and grow in their interests, so working at NCA, where that concept is understood and embraced, is refreshing,” says Alyssa King, Director of Admissions, External Affairs and Technology.
Soon, there will be more spaces to feed the imagination and sharpen the 21st century skills of NCA students. “There are multiple exciting opportunities on the horizon: Eagles’ Makerspace for 3D printing, CNC applications, textiles, robotics, a disc golf course that runs through our beautiful campus, the expansion of our hydroponic gardening club and a media production suite for photography, videography and audio engineering,” King adds. “With all of the above, plus our expanding esports lab and classes for the fall, I’m thrilled about the future of NCA.”
The state-of-the-art Esports lab has expanded to 13 stations. A video and audio production suite that accommodates high-quality streaming — and includes quality software, green screens, photo backdrops, and various recording equipment — is underway. The Esports curriculum has been updated with courses that cover gaming concepts, streaming, design, interactive media and more.
With these additions, making, exploring and sharing has never been more dynamic or experiential than it is now at NCA. Students have high-tech tools like 3D printers, laser cutters, CNC machines, soldering irons and sewing machines that let them learn by doing. More than just shiny gadgets, they are catalysts that help hone 21st century skills, such as critical thinking and self-confidence, especially in the fields of science, technology, engineering and math (STEM), among NCA students.
For all that’s new here, NCA is first and foremost a full service boarding school where students are cared for in all aspects. Classes are small, with a ratio of one teacher to six students, so students get all the face time they need. It’s an approach that works, especially when it’s paired with the school’s unique University Pathway Programmes, which allow qualifying students in grades 11 and 12 the opportunity to earn their Associate of Arts & Science degree (or up to 60 university credits) while still in high school.
“We are very pleased to provide pathway programmes that partner with the University of Wisconsin–Eau Claire and the University of Minnesota Duluth, and our graduates are on dual enrolment and are guaranteed enrolment to these universities,” says Lovorn. “That is an expanding list, as a matter of fact. We are working with other universities currently to grow our partnerships with universities. That said, in recent years, our graduates have gone to Brown University, Harvard University, Ohio State, University of Illinois and several international universities. So we are very proud of our alumni and our students.”
