Lead public health with Medical University of South Carolina

Are we living better today? According to the World Health Statistics 2025 report, the answer is a cautious yes. On one hand, global health has taken a leap forward: 1.4 billion more people were living healthier lives by the end of 2024, thanks to cleaner air, better access to water, hygiene, and sanitation, and reduced tobacco use.

However, the journey is far from over. Only 431 million more people gained access to essential health services without financial hardship. Mothers and children are still at risk, as health workers are stretched too thin to meet gaps in immunisation and safe childbirth. Without urgent intervention, we might lose 700,000 mothers and eight million children under the age of five between 2024 and 2030.

Changing lives starts here

In Charleston, South Carolina, the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) has spent generations redefining what it means to care for a community. As the state’s largest and oldest academic medical centre, its College of Medicine is home to the Master of Public Health (MPH), which prepares students to address global challenges such as health equity, environmental threats, and disease prevention. Accredited by the Council on Education for Public Health (CEPH), the programme equips learners from any location with the skills and perspectives needed to create meaningful change in diverse populations.

“My time in the MPH programme helped me to see the bigger picture in public health. I learned how to think critically, work with different communities, and find real solutions to health problems,” says Sara Alsharayri from Jordan, MUSC MPH graduate and current MUSC PhD student.

Innovative education for future health leaders

Every course in the MPH is guided by the Department of Public Health Sciences’ mission to improve population health in and around the Lowcountry and across the state and globe. Offered as an asynchronous and online five-semester programme, the MPH Generalist concentration prepares you to assess the health of varied populations and develop rigorous, evidence-based strategies to meet their needs. It covers a range of topics, from foundational public health and global health to epidemiology and data analysis.

But public health isn’t something you learn from books alone. That’s why the MPH includes a 180-hour field placement and ends with a professional project or report. By interning with local and regional hospitals, government agencies, non-profit organisations, and pharmaceutical companies, you will gain firsthand experience in improving public health on the ground.

“The MPH programme at MUSC provided me with a strong foundation in public health practice and research. The supportive faculty and interdisciplinary environment helped me grow both academically and professionally while solidifying my statistical analysis skills, which have been invaluable in my current programme. My experience at MUSC continues to shape my career and passion for improving population health,” says graduate Vincent Anokye from Ghana.

Public health without borders

Not everyone can pause their lives to move across states or oceans for graduate school though, and MUSC understands that. The MPH Generalist concentration’s flexible structure makes it possible for you to pursue your MPH from anywhere. No matter what your time zone or location is, you can learn, grow, and connect on your own schedule. And you don’t need to worry about applying for a visa or finding a place to stay overseas — just an internet connection and a passion for change.

The Generalist concentration delivers a well-rounded education in population health. Through its courses that promote population health, research, and leadership skills, you will learn to understand the needs of communities, build strategies that work, and advocate for healthier, more equitable futures.

And while it’s delivered entirely online, the experience feels anything but distant. “The MUSC MPH programme has been an amazing experience thus far. Although I am an online student and do not have many face-to-face interactions with classmates or professors, I still feel very connected and valued,” says student Mary Hill. “All communication between professors, faculty, department leaders, advisors, financial aid, enrollment staff, etc. has been extremely helpful and each person made sure I had everything I needed to succeed throughout the semesters.”

Ultimately, the Generalist concentration helps you to take your passion for public health anywhere in the world. The knowledge and skills you gain open doors to careers in public health agencies, health departments, hospitals, other health care organisations, government regulatory agencies, not-for-profit agencies, academic institutions, and industry.

“The online programme has been both enjoyable and intellectually engaging,” says student Nicole Sullivan. “The schedule and professors are incredibly accommodating, making it easy for individuals like me who are working full-time to manage the workload and be flexible.”

Applications for the Fall 2026 MPH programme open on December 1, 2025. Apply at apply.musc.edu or contact MUSC at mphadmissions@musc.edu
