Kingswood School: Where boarding houses are second homes

Kingswood School: Where boarding houses are second homes

Located on an outstanding 200-acre site in Lansdown, Bath, Kingswood School adopts a forward-thinking, can-do approach.

Instilling confidence, open-mindedness and a spirit of enquiry in all learners, this inclusive institution consists of a Prep School (nine months-11 years) and a Senior School (11-18 years), offering a broad and holistic education with boarding from age seven.

“A family-friendly day and boarding school, Kingswood balances academic rigour and real objectives for all pupils with the outstanding pastoral care for which Kingswood is known. Many parents comment on the School’s kind and nurturing environment, the absence of pretension and how happy their children are to attend,” explains Headmaster of the Prep School, Mark Brearey.

Boarding at Westwood House

Developing self-assurance and high levels of personal motivation from day one, in this learning environment, learners achieve astonishing success as they constantly progress beyond their natural potential.

A Junior boarding house for students in Years 7-8, Westwood is committed and determined to provide the very best pastoral care for your son or daughter as they board.

Establishing a family dynamic, three resident staff live in Westwood House with their respective families. Boarders benefit from plenty of interaction with these families while staff keep a close eye on your son or daughter’s academic progress and well-being.

Kingswood staff are extremely experienced in looking after children. Acknowledging that international students are a long way from home, teachers and matrons are there to help them settle, develop and become independent while still feeling the community’s support.

Viewing their boarding house as a second home, Kingswood boarders often miss the community whilst on summer trips or away from the school.

As the school’s latest ISI inspection report states, “The overall quality of boarding provision and care is excellent. A strong sense of community exists among the pupils and boarders feel an essential part of the school.”

Transformative boarding experiences at Kingswood

Before walking into the comfort of Westwood House, the School’s youngest boarders, aged seven to 11, get to experience High Vinnalls.

With a homely lounge and dining room, board games, table football, computer games and a wall-mounted TV with access to Sky TV, Kingswood has maintained a warm and welcoming community in High Vinnalls and all boarding houses.

That’s why, after High Vinnalls and Westwood, they make their way to the various other boarding houses on-campus such as Summerhill, Fonthill, School House, Middle House, Hall House and Upper House.

There’s never a dull moment for students here. With a variety of boarding houses and an assortment of activities to match, student engagement meets enjoyment at the Kingswood boarding houses.

Inclusive and diverse student activities

On-site boarding initiatives include early morning yoga, swimming, tennis and cricket (in season), evening floodlit hockey or tennis, PE, community games, music practice and weekend sports fixtures.

On weekends, boarders can go to town and explore the beauty of Bath in groups and with prefects on Saturday afternoons.

For off-site activities, boarder trips take place on a Sunday afternoon and typically include visits to the cinema, theatres, laser tag, climbing, ten-pin bowling, WWT Slimbridge, outlet shopping, Crazy Golf and more.

There have also been exciting trips to places such as Harry Potter World, Longleat, Cotswold Water Park, Air Hop Trampoline Park, Swindon Oasis, the Hidden Woods and various other theme parks, keeping team-building days fun and consistent.

Despite having lots of leisure activities to choose from at Kingswood School, some boarders prefer to remain on-campus to enjoy the Upper Playing Fields and state-of-the-art Pavilion. As you can see from this behind-the-scenes video and virtual tour, the School’s surroundings are a captivating outdoor playground for curious minds and creative explorers.
