When it comes to providing a broad yet inclusive education, few can match what Strathallan School offers. This leading Scottish boarding school was founded in 1913 with four visions: to know each pupil as an individual, to foster joy in learning, to embrace inclusivity, and to champion the value of hard work in transforming lives through education. Today, Strathallan’s legacy speaks for itself. It ranks among Scotland’s top five private schools for GCSE and A Levels and was shortlisted for the Independent Boarding School of the Year award in 2024.
“We have high expectations at Strathallan and this encourages our pupils to believe in themselves, to be inquisitive, to be resilient and to show ambition both in and out of the classroom,” says Headmaster Mr. D M Lauder. “They feel happy and valued, which helps them succeed in a fast-changing world.”

Is everyone at Strathallan a boarder?
Around two thirds of pupils are boarders while the rest are day pupils. Some board full-time, while others have more flexible arrangements – for example, when parents have work or other commitments.
Strathallan boarders live in one of seven boarding houses and are supported by a matron and house tutors. With this community, most staff living on-site, Saturday school, and a packed co-curricular calendar, the campus is alive all days of the week.
Does this mean day pupils may feel left out? Whether they’re day pupils or boarders, the school makes no distinction. Here, everyone has the chance to get involved with all aspects of life at the school.
“Being a boarder has been an amazing experience,” says Eva D L, a current international pupil. “I have made my closest friends, and the activities and events the school puts on have allowed me to discover many things about myself.”
What are the benefits of studying in a boarding school in Scotland?
Scotland is known for warm welcomes, stunning landscapes, and world-class education. Set in 153 acres of rural Perthshire, Strathallan captures this very essence: beautiful surroundings, fresh air, and plenty of spaces to learn and relax. One moment, a pupil may be in the library; the next, they’re in one of the many modern academic classrooms, such as Art School, Science Lab, and Dance and Drama Studio. Even the cool Scottish air adds to the experience — just make sure your child is all bundled up.

Apart from lessons, what do pupils do here?
With over 150 co-curricular activities to choose from, there’s something for everyone. Those with a flair for the arts can get involved in drama productions, dance classes, or join one of the many music groups.
For curious minds seeking more intellectual stimulation, there are academic clubs like the Science Olympiad team and Model United Nations. Pupils who prefer to stay active can participate in sports such as running, fencing, or outdoor challenges through the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award programme. And for something truly unique, Strathallan is the only school in Scotland with its own clay target range.
What happens if a pupil struggles with the English language?
At Strathallan, skilled educators create purposeful, play-based experiences designed to nurture the whole child. If their first language isn’t English, the English as an Additional Language (EAL) team offers personalised support. Whether a pupil is preparing for the IELTS exams or want to speak confidently, there are experts to support your child to realise their goals.

Is it easy to make friends at school?
From the moment a pupil arrives, they’re welcomed into a supportive community where friendships last a lifetime. Each House has its own special traditions and regularly hold inter-house events. Meanwhile, Strathallan Prep pupils benefit from the best of both worlds. With just 12 to 14 pupils per class, they enjoy the care and expertise of dedicated primary educators while also learning from senior school subject specialists.
“This is the kind of learning I really enjoy. Strathallan has given me so many opportunities, and everyone is so supportive,” says Max E, an international boarder.
Can international pupils understand the Scottish accent?
The Scottish accent is one of the most distinct accents in the UK, and it might take a little time to get used to. However, with a bit of practice and exposure, it will quickly start making sense!
At Strathallan, this transition is made even easier. Teachers speak clearly and with a welcoming international community, you’ll be surrounded by peers who understand what adapting to a new environment is like.
What more can pupils learn about Scottish customs while studying there?
Scotland may be small but it’s overflowing with culture. From traditional Highland Games and ceilidhs to Burns Night celebrations and pipe band performances, life at Strathallan is steeped in Scottish heritage. There is the Department of Traditional Music and Culture as well, where your child can watch or perform in one of Strathallan’s four pipe bands.
