University of Szeged: Excellence in economics and business education

When Youssef Hoshan began his journey at the University of Szeged‘s (SZTE) Faculty of Economics and Business Administration, he couldn’t have imagined how transformative the experience would be. The Bachelor’s in Business Administration and Management (BAM) programme caught his attention with its flexibility and diverse subjects.

The core courses provided a solid foundation in economics, while the optional and semi-optional courses like “Marketing” or “Management” and “Introduction to Consumer Behaviour” gave him the chance to specialise based on his interests and career goals. “Adding Public Speaking and Presentation Skills gave me a practical edge in communication, crucial for excelling in any field,” he says.

Now in his final year, Hoshan sees his time here as a journey of personal growth, skill development, and building connections.

“If you’re seeking an environment where you can thrive academically, culturally, and personally, Faculty of Economics and Business Administration at the SZTE is the place to be,” he says.

Transformative degree programmes at a leading institution

SZTE is one of Hungary’s leading higher education institutions, known for its high-quality programmes across various fields. As a member of the European Higher Education Area (EHEA), SZTE holds EU accreditation and consistently ranks as the best university in Hungary by QS World University Rankings. Its Faculty of Economics and Business Administration provides training for future economists through its popular English-taught programmes at all levels – one of which is the BAM programme.

This seven-semester programme is accredited by the EFMD and prepares students to become professional managers across various sectors. The BAM programme focuses on equipping students with both conceptual and interpersonal skills while developing their entrepreneurial capabilities, ensuring they are well-rounded and ready for the workforce.

A key feature of the BAM programme is its hands-on approach. In the final semester, students get to intern at multinational, local, or non-profit companies, gaining valuable real-world experience that sets them apart from the competition.

Within or beyond campus, lecturers and administrative staff are always available to guide students and hone their talents. Whether it’s becoming a mentor, taking part in student competitions, or getting involved in international experiences, students are encouraged to seize as many opportunities as possible. Just ask Ahmad Hajasad, a BAM graduate.

“I had an amazing first year experience,” he says. “I became a mentor for first year students, and tried as much as I can to guide them in the same way I was guided by my mentor in my first year. I also became a teacher assistant to some of the classes I enjoyed the most, which offered me great experience that will benefit me for years to come.”

Another programme SZTE offers is the eight-semester Bachelor’s in Tourism and Catering. Focusing on leadership skills, hotel management, and executive knowledge in tour operation, this programme equips students for careers as fully licensed economists, ready to take on managerial positions in this dynamic field. In Hungary and in Szeged, Tourism and Catering programmes are part of Economics and Business education

Like the BAM programme, the Bachelor’s in Tourism and Catering is just as engaging and experiential. Alongside SZTE professors, students get to learn from leading professionals in the field, such as hotel and restaurant managers and directors of tourism offices.

“I feel grateful that I have found the Tourism and Catering programme, because I met so many amazing teachers who are working in the industry, and this way we could get insights of their work and see ourselves in their shoes for our future,” says Enikő Gróf, a fresh Bachelor’s in Tourism and Catering graduate.

The programme culminates in two semesters of internships, which often lead to job opportunities. Eszter Gáspár, a graduate, secured a full-time position at Proko Travel, a travel agency after a three-month internship. “Two semesters of work experience are a great advantage, because it gives you more practical knowledge and you can decide easier which area is the most suitable for you,” she says. “That’s exactly what I got at Proko Travel and it showed me how colourful this profession is.”

Learning from the best

At every step of their SZTE journey, students are guided by lecturers who genuinely care about their academic and career growth. Professors are cooperative and always ready to lend a helping hand whenever needed.

“The faculty staff and lecturers are another reason why I consider SZTE as an outstanding institution,” Hajasad says. “I had courses with lecturers that became role models to me. Not only do they have an exceptional method of teaching, but many of the lecturers practise what they teach, and have amazing careers that align with their courses, which I believe is an advantage as they can provide examples and scenarios on how to handle real-life problems.”

This supportive environment was so impactful that Hajasad decided to continue his academic journey at SZTE, pursuing a master’s degree right after completing his bachelor’s.
