But this isn’t the faculty’s only pathway to an impactful career.

Durba Biswas from Bangladesh, who is passionate about seeing more nature in tomorrow’s habitual areas, found everything she needed and more in the Master’s in Mineral Resources and Sustainable Mining. Growing up surrounded by farmland, she had only experienced pollution in big cities like Dhaka, where she graduated with a degree in environmental science and realised the role she could play in environmental preservation. The programme she chose offers specialisations in geosciences and mining engineering, covering the whole mining value chain – from exploration to mining, concentration, refining, and closure.

“Minerals have become a very important part of our life because they are needed for many technological devices, but acquiring minerals can affect the environment a lot,” explains Biswas. “I want to learn about that impact and how to remediate the consequences.” And since anything is possible in Oulu, there’s really no stopping her. After all, three billion people are using the wireless communications technology developed in Oulu every single day. Situated in the Northern reaches of Scandinavia, the region is the perfect blend of breathtaking northern nature, vibrant cultural life, and cutting-edge technology.

“I will do my best in whatever I do, studies or work, if I know my efforts will be valued by society.” Says Sara Saroukhani, an Environmental Engineering student from Iran. “I feel like Finland has the right environment to experience that kind of validation.”
