University of Delaware: Earn a STEM business degree in the US

Areas that require STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) professionals are among the fastest-growing and highest-paying, especially in the US. Projecting a 4% growth in employment by 2033, this positive outlook is signaling one thing: it’s a great time to start sharpening your skills in STEM.

With 97% employed graduates as evidence, the Alfred Lerner College of Business & Economics at the University of Delaware (UD) is the perfect place to start.

There are many reasons why UD’s Lerner College is ahead of the curve when it comes to STEM-designated business degrees. For one, the college connects you with some of the nation’s leading tech and finance companies, where many international graduates secure employment. This is accomplished through the college’s business program that emphasizes STEM in its courses.

STEM-designated business degrees

Take the specialized MBA program, MBA Business Analytics, for example. This Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB) International-accredited business degree offers a solid base of business management knowledge before jumping into more data-oriented subjects that will focus on using data science to inform business decisions, optimize operations, and predict future trends.

“The hands-on simulations led by Professor Darwin Davis in the course Operations Management and Management Science greatly enriched my comprehension of inventory management concepts and their real-world applications,” says student Aniket Turaskar. “The simulations provided an understanding of the challenges faced by managers when tasked with overseeing substantial operations while maintaining strict cost control.”

These lessons apply not only in class but also to various everyday tasks such as tracking expenses and savings, optimizing resource allocation, prioritizing tasks, and managing household inventory.

If the MBA has a concentration in Business Analytics, the MS in Business Analytics and Information Management (MS) is fully focused on using data to manage change and meet business challenges with confidence.

The program will harness your compassion and comradeship as you work as a team of future IT consultants, systems analysts, and business analysts. “Studying alongside a diverse group of students and teachers from various backgrounds provided me with unique perspectives and enriched my understanding of different cultures and viewpoints,” says student Fardin Khan. “This environment fostered a deep sense of empathy and teamwork, highlighting the importance of valuing different ideas and experiences, which is essential for personal and professional growth.”

The same can be found in the college’s MS Finance program where students come from various backgrounds, cultures, and experiences, creating a rich and dynamic learning environment. “This diversity fosters unique perspectives and enriches our discussions, enabling us to learn from one another and broaden our horizons,” says student Tolulope Komolafe.

The program covers both quantitative and qualitative aspects of financial decision-making including risk management, capital budgeting, investments, financing, and corporate governance. Here, you will be able to solve financial problems through action-oriented practice, a highlight of the curriculum.

“I personally worked on a project where I analyzed a real-world business scenario and proposed innovative strategies to reduce environmental impact while maintaining profitability,” Komolafe says. “This sharpened my analytical skills; it also deepened my understanding in business management and sustainability which continues to influence my approach to problem-solving in my career.”

Other STEM-designated business degrees include MS in Accounting, MS in Hospitality and Sport Business Analytics, and MS in Financial Services Analytics. There is a dual-degree option if you would like to combine specialized skills and knowledge from a variety of disciplines. Dual STEM-designated degrees include MBA + MS in Accounting, MBA + MS in Business Analytics and Information Management, MBA + MS in Finance, and MS in Business Analytics and Information Management + MS in Cybersecurity.

A welcoming community

Studying at UD’s Lerner College means being part of a vibrant global community. Students from over 100 countries make up 44% of the graduate population in the college. It’s like a big club for international students, each on the same journey as you are. Living and learning here is further made easier with the help of the Centre for Global Programs and Services, providing you with immigration advising and support services.

New students are assigned mentors who will guide them through the application process. This is important for applying an Optional Practical Training (OPT), a temporary employment for students to work in the US without requiring a work visa for up to 12 months. However, with a STEM degree in your hands, this period can be extended for an additional 24 months. This extended OPT is a significant advantage for STEM graduates, as it allows them to gain valuable work experiences in the nation.

Strategic base

Located close to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, New York City, and Washington DC, UD’s Lerner College in Newark, Delaware is surrounded by many business centres and other amenities. There’s no shortage of cutting-edge facilities on campus either. From the Geltzeiler Trading Centre, a replica of trading floors on Wall Street, to the JPMorgan Chase Innovation Centre, there are many places you can apply knowledge to some of the most topical issues organizations are facing today. Over at the student-operated fine dining eatery called Vita Nova Restaurant, you can enjoy delicious food cooked and served by UD students from the Hospitality and Sport Business Management department.
