UNH Manchester: Igniting careers in tech and biotech

To truly excel in the fields of technology and biotechnology, students need an education that’s as dynamic as the industries they’re stepping into. That’s where the University of New Hampshire at Manchester (UNH Manchester) comes in. Ranked 115th in the US, it is a powerhouse of innovation and opportunity, preparing students toward success in the most cutting-edge sectors of today and tomorrow.

Central to its mission is a commitment to providing students with the tools they need to advance their careers. Each programme here has been meticulously crafted to meet industry demands, ensuring students are equipped with the skills and knowledge necessary to thrive in their chosen fields. This explains why 98% of its graduate students are either employed or pursuing further education within six months of completing their studies.

All lessons are delivered from Manchester — New Hampshire’s largest city and its very own hub for business, technology and biotechnology. The Wall Street Journal confirmed this, ranking the city fourth in the US for its cutting-edge tech workers. Just an hour away from Boston, Massachusetts — another tech hub in the US — this strategic location ensures future-focused students are not just observers but active participants in the 21st-century industries shaping the future. Through research projects, internships and events, they immerse themselves in real-world scenarios that pave the way for their future success.

UNH Manchester has three cutting-edge programmes designed to bridge the gap between academia and industry. The MS in Information Technology is one of them. This programme was designed to equip students with the skills and knowledge required to navigate an ever-expanding field that isn’t just about coding or troubleshooting — it encompasses mobile applications, cloud services, virtual reality, high-speed networks, automation, and much more. Classes blend theoretical foundations and hands-on project experiences.

The MS in Cybersecurity Engineering is equally experiential, encouraging students to delve deep into the core and advanced principles of information security through a comprehensive core curriculum and various electives. In the process, they hone their abilities to develop, integrate, and evaluate secure IT systems and services for a range of organisations — from financial institutions to entertainment giants.

The programme sees students constantly tackling real-world cybersecurity challenges head-on, gaining invaluable experience in identifying, analysing and responding to complex threats. And with UNH Manchester being the first institution in New Hampshire to be designated a National Centre of Excellence in Cyber Defense Education by the US National Security Agency and the Department of Homeland Security, there truly is no better place to undergo such training.

Those more interested in using the power of biology and genetics to create solutions to pressing challenges can opt for the MS in Biotechnology: Industrial and Biomedical Sciences instead. The experience comprises 30% skill-based training and 70% hands-on laboratory experiences to prepare students for dynamic careers in biotechnology, biopharmaceuticals and regenerative manufacturing.

“I was particularly drawn to the co-op capstone component,” says student Sandra Abukeremah Nsoh from Ghana. “It offers students the opportunity to spend six months interning at an established biotech company. I knew the experience I would gain from the project would be valuable to my career.”

Perhaps what truly sets this programme apart is its deep links with industry through the Biotechnology Innovation Centre (BIC) and BIC incubator space, where students can collaborate with industry partners in biotech, pharma and medtech to cultivate transferable job skills. UNH Manchester’s partnership with the Advanced Regenerative Manufacturing Institute (ARMI) and its BioFabUSA programme further enhance the experience.

Across programmes, students at UNH Manchester benefit from an intimate campus community that sees them working side-by-side with expert educators who love doubling as mentors. With a 12:1 student-to-faculty ratio, classes are kept small to foster a collaborative learning environment where every voice is heard, and every opportunity is within reach.

Success is virtually guaranteed through all three programmes, considering they all boast between a 98%-100% placement rate. The best part? None of them require Graduate Record Examinations (GRE) results for application, freeing students from the constraints of standardised testing.

Tuition costs less than US$19,000 per year — a rarity amongst professional master’s programmes focused on these fields or offered in this location. UNH Manchester even offers a US$2,000  scholarship to exemplary applicants. In fact, 90% of students here have received some form of financial aid. It’s little wonder why the institution was dubbed the #2 Best Value College in New Hampshire.
