Ulster University transforms students into innovative and creative architects

Names like Riken Yamamoto, David Chipperfield, and Diébédo Francis Kéré may mean nothing to most people, but for aspiring architects, they are some of the top masters of the craft. These Pritzker Architecture Prize winners – often referred to as the Nobel Prize of architecture – are behind some of the most iconic buildings in the world and have made an impact in the world of architecture simply by having one goal in mind: to build a better world.

To follow in their footsteps, you first need to enhance your knowledge and skills to become a great architect. The second thing you’ll need is a launchpad – and that place is Ulster University’s Belfast School of Architecture and the Built Environment (BSABE).

Pioneering, innovative, and creative – these are what you will be as a BSABE student at Times Higher Education University of the Year 2024, the most prestigious title of all by the trusted publication. Times Higher Education University of the Year 2024, noting the University as being a “force for good” in Northern Ireland. Ulster University was hailed as a “force for good in fostering peace, prosperity and cohesion” – a standing that BSABE programmes live up to.

Located in the capital of Northern Ireland in the city’s Cathedral Quarter, the school offers multidisciplinary education that covers a wide range of subjects, from civil and energy engineering to real estate, environmental health and architecture. The United Nations  Sustainable Development Goals are never exempt from modules here.

Regularly receiving over 10% of all UK-based applications for construction courses, this is a school with an established track record of success. It is here where you will learn how to design, make, and construct the built environment of the 21st century – and do so in a way that’ll make you an in-demand graduate.

The school offers undergraduate programmes that can be pursued full-time or part-time. They focus on Architecture, Architectural Technology and Management, Building & Quantity Surveying, Architectural, Civil, Construction, Energy & Safety Engineering; Environmental Health, and Planning and Real Estate.

The Architecture – BA (Hons) is validated by the Royal Institute of British Architects and is prescribed by the Architects Registration Board. This studio-based programme engages in the complex and changing context of architecture, urbanism, and landscape taking place in society today. For three academic years, you will learn how to design new buildings and make changes to existing ones through rigorous coursework.

No matter which degree you pursue, all modules are informed by award-winning research. Most recently, the UK-wide Research Excellence Framework ranked the BSABE in the top eight in the country, with 100% of the school’s research environment judged as being conducive to producing research of world-leading and internationally excellent quality. This resulted in attracting funding from a wide variety of sources, totalling around US$430 million, which goes to the research centres at its Belfast campus.

These research centres include the Centre for Sustainable Technologies (CST), Centre for Research on Property and Planning (RPP), Fire Safety Engineering Research & Technology Centre (FireSERT), Hydrogen Safety Engineering and Research (HySAFER), and Studies Allied to Built Environment Research (SABER). At these five research centres, you can be part of projects with national and global impact.

Take the Transformative Health & Regeneration Initiatives (for Vibrancy, Equality, and Sustainability), also known as the Belfast -THRI(VES) project at SABER, for example. This collaboration with Belfast City Council studies holistic health and well-being models for the long-term planning, designing, and managing of the city centre’s public spaces. Initially a response to the COVID-19 pandemic, this project continues to provide solutions to any possible health and socio-economic threats.

Collaboration and partnership work are at the core of all BSABE programmes. They give you various opportunities to work closely with a professional organisation, providing you with the ins and outs of how the industry operates. With such insights, you’re better prepared to impress recruiters with your on-the-job knowledge and increases the chances of you landing your dream roles. According to the latest published statistics, 85% of BSABE graduates are now working in the field, finding work after graduation. For some prorammes, 100% of graduates found work immediately.
