If you dream of studying abroad, you may have heard of the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL). Over 35 million people in the world have taken this test so far; many prepared with TOEFL practice tests.

TOEFL is a language test required for anyone enrolling in an English-speaking university. Additionally, you can use your test score to apply for work and immigration.

What is TOEFL?

The standardised TOEFL test is accepted by over 11,000 universities in 130 countries worldwide. This includes universities in the US, the UK, Australia, New Zealand, and Canada. It is even accepted by European universities, such as those in France and Germany.

There are four components to the test: reading, listening, speaking, and writing. See the breakdown in the video below.

TOEFL is designed and administered by a private non-profit organisation called Educational Testing Service (ETS). ETS sends your official score directly to the university. This score is valid for two years.

What do I need to take TOEFL?

Before you take the test, check the language requirements at the university you want to enrol in.

You can either take the test at home or at a centre near you. Make sure you register at least seven days ahead. You will need to pay the fee when you register.

It costs $180 to take the TOEFL, and $60 to change your test date.

If you must cancel, do it at least three days before the exam so you receive a refund.
