Every school has its own idea of what education should achieve. At Radley College, that idea dates back to 1847, when its founders, inspired by the Oxford Movement within the Anglican Church, set out to create a community built around Christian principles of brotherhood. Generations of boys have passed through Radley since then, with the confidence to pursue their ambitions and the character to use that confidence well.
But character isn’t shaped solely by lessons. From Radley’s earliest days, there was a belief that the environment surrounding a boy could influence the person he becomes. Perhaps that explains why place has always mattered here. Radley unfolds across 800 acres of Oxfordshire, where Victorian architecture meets modern buildings. Here, boys have the space to learn and play — with plenty to discover throughout the year.

Where sport becomes part of life
Come Spring and Summer, rowing becomes a familiar sight at the College, with 165 boys taking to the water as part of Radley College Boat Club’s (RCBC) world-class programme. Training is led by two-time Olympic finalist Sam Townsend and head coach Patrick Duggan, who has guided multiple Great Britain teams through medal-winning campaigns. The best rowers can progress to represent Great Britain on the global stage.
Radley has its own stretch of the River Thames and is the only boat club within six kilometres, so there’s no competition for room on the water. The boathouse is due to be redeveloped with high-tech boats and kit, and boys can also practise at the indoor rowing tank.
All those hours on the water pay off. At the 2026 National Schools Regatta, Radley’s 1st VIII set the fastest schoolboy time ever recorded on the Olympic Dorney Lake course — five seconds faster than the previous record from 2019. While Sixth Former Dylan set a new national school indoor rowing record after covering 402 metres in a one-minute ergo test.
Eventually, every Radley rower races for the College for the last time. But their oars don’t get put away. Some take up rowing scholarships at leading US universities, while others return as Old Radleians through the Radley Mariners’ Boat Club.
“I would never have dreamed of going to the Henley Royal Regatta after barely being able to balance during my first session as a Shell (Year 9), and yet I raced with the 2nd VIII while my family watched proudly from the side,” shares Old Radleian Lohan Baker. “My time rowing at Radley has produced some of my most memorable moments and given me friends for life. It will be a part of Radley that I remember with great fondness.”
There’s plenty happening away from the river too. Radley competes against other schools in more than 20 sports. In 2025 alone, over 130 teams played in fixtures — and every boy was part of one.

Where Radley boys go next
If sports teach boys how to compete and work as a team, Radley’s academics give them another set of skills to take with them: how to question information, think creatively, and collaborate with others and boys consistently achieve some of the best results in the country.
The Futures team then helps them consider how those strengths could shape life beyond Radley. In 2026, 96 boys (56%) are bound for QS global Top 100 institutions, such as Durham University, the University of Bristol, the London School of Economics and Political Science, and the University of Warwick. 58 boys (34%) are heading to universities in the QS global Top 50, including the University of Oxford, the University of Cambridge, Imperial College London, University College London, and the University of Edinburgh, as well as leading US universities. Meanwhile, 14 boys secured early offers to study in the US, including at Yale University, the University of Pennsylvania, and Harvard University.
