North Dakota State University: Making a quality education accessible to all

As Kayla Jones prepared to address her fellow graduates at North Dakota State University’s (NDSU) upcoming commencement, she thought about more than just her own journey. She wanted to inspire her peers to reflect on lessons learned, challenges overcome, and moments that shaped them. “I hope they can see the value of their own story and the importance of their individual experiences,” she says.

Her words embody the spirit of NDSU, where a high-quality education is paired with meaningful experiences — all at an affordable price. Such packages are hard to come about nowadays — education in the US is expensive. The average annual tuition for public out-of-state colleges starts at US$27,020, and private colleges cost approximately US$37,650. Meanwhile, NDSU is proud of its average annual tuition of US$10,792 and even prouder of its 95% acceptance rate. These numbers never fail to ease the minds of ambitious students with limited resources.

“Many students I speak with are particularly concerned about affordability due to financial constraints,” shares Samantha D’Souza, NDSU’s Recruitment Representative from South Asia.

“To resolve their worries and meet their needs, the university offers excellent educational opportunities with a cost-effective pricing structure. This makes it an attractive choice for those seeking value and quality in their higher education experience.”

This affordability, however, doesn’t come at the expense of quality. Located on the eastern edge of North Dakota in Fargo, NDSU is an R1 institution with an extensive lineup of industry-informed undergraduate, graduate or certificate programmes that can be tailored to match all sorts of aspirations.

“This extensive array underscores our commitment to delivering a versatile and thorough educational experience,” says D’Souza. The broad lineup enabled Jones to earn both her bachelor’s in psychology and a master’s in education in one place — doing so made her academic career all the more special.

“The experiences I had in college changed my life, and I want to share that because my story throughout college can be just as rich as the academic knowledge I have gained in college,” enthuses the graduate, who loved staying engaged beyond classrooms. At NDSU, Jones was the former president of the Black Student Association and a member of the Blue Key Honor Society. She also served on the President’s Council for Diversity, Inclusion and Respect for two years. The university’s 250+ student clubs and organisations ensure all learners take their next academic step or first professional step equipped with this level of exposure.

For Trinh Ta, a current neuroscience undergraduate student from Vietnam, NDSU’s true value lies in its supportive environment, which extends beyond academics to include activities and services that help students build connections and feel secure.

“The school environment is very friendly and safe because NDSU always makes sure to create services to provide help for students,” she says. “The International Student Office, in particular, stands out as a valuable resource, providing unwavering support and guidance to assist students like me.”

An inspired Ta couldn’t resist getting involved. When she isn’t broadening her horizons in classrooms, she’s serving as a Student Assistant in the International Student and Study Abroad Office. Her role revolves around lending a helping hand to some of the over 800 international students from more than 80 countries who chose NDSU as their launchpad to success.

And here, guidance always leads to outstanding outcomes. The university currently boasts a 94% success rate, with 74% of its 2023 cohort employed within six months and 20% continuing their studies.

Cole Sunde, a marketing graduate now employed as a product manager at CorVent Medical, attributes his success to the practical nature of his curriculum. “NDSU has prepared me for the workforce by giving me classes that are actually applicable in the real world, whether it be in operations, sales, or marketing. I feel like I am bringing value to my employer,” he says.

Another alum, Cole Kramer, now a manufacturing engineer at DFC Company, is especially appreciative of NDSU’s career services. “They helped connect me to my current company, provided me with resources to meet employers, and also gave me the skills and knowledge to go into the industry,” he shares. “Thanks to the university, I have the confidence to contribute to the engineering industry and help create a better world.”
