Midway University: Offering STEM-designated degrees on a quaint campus

As we head into a digital world, the best universities are tweaking their programmes to focus better on science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). The goal is obvious: to prepare their graduates to seize opportunities and keep up with today’s workforce demands. Of the 195.8 million jobs identified in the US, 33% were direct high-skilled STEM professions.

This is projected to increase by 10.4% come 2033  – making now the right time to pursue a career in STEM, and Midway University in Kentucky the perfect start.

Situated in the centre of Kentucky’s internationally renowned horse country, the university offers Biology, Computer Science, and Mathematics programmes for undergraduates looking to jumpstart their STEM careers. At the postgraduate level, the Master of Management Information Systems is a great option to get to the forefront of digital transformation.

Whichever you choose, you will work closely with lecturers, faculty members, and the rest of the teaching staff on this small 200-acre campus . “We have so many resources on campus that if you ever need anything at all, someone here can help you or find you the help that you need,” graduate Erin McQueen says .

With the help of your educators, you will go through a career-based curriculum that prepares you for a fulfilling job, especially in STEM. Take the Bachelor of Science in Biology, for example. This programme weaves faculty-led research into its curriculum, giving you all the practical and theoretical knowledge you need. The programme covers general biology, zoology, ecology and evolution, microbiology, genetics, and molecular biology. If you want to take your education to the next level, there are pre-professional programmes in medical, dental, pharmacy, physical and occupational therapy, and veterinary sciences. Either way, you will gain field, analytical, and laboratory skills that ready you for diverse entry-level positions in biology-related areas.

The Bachelor of Science in Computer Science trains you to apply technology to solve a wide range of problems in computer technology. Whether through programming, designing user interfaces, managing networks, building databases, or securing data, these skills will help you become indispensable in the technology sector. With this degree in hand, you can reach for roles such as network architect, programmer, support specialist, database administrator, software/web developer, digital designer, and more.

Those pursuing a Bachelor of Arts in Mathematics will gain skills in logic, problem-solving, and data analysis. You will be familiar with mathematical concepts that are useful in sectors like actuarial science, engineering, operations research, data processing, computer science, and education, as well as fields outside of mathematics like banking, law, and economics. Even if you do not come from a mathematics background, pursuing this programme will help you effectively apply appropriate quantitative tools and logic to analyse and synthesise information for problem-solving.

The only STEM-designated postgraduate programme that Midway University offers is the Master of Management Information Systems (MMIS). The programme ensures you understand how to leverage information systems to create competitive advantages in the dynamic business landscape. This goes beyond the technical skills and focuses just as much on shaping you into a well-rounded business leader as you are trained to tackle practical challenges in the field. With an MMIS degree, you can land roles like management analyst, systems administrator, cyber security operations specialist, database developer, data engineer, and solutions specialist.

Coming from abroad? Midway University has your back. International students will feel at home in one of the four residence halls on campus. Whether you settle in Buster Hall, Belle Wisdom Hall, Library Hall, or Pinkerton Hall, resident assistants will support you and organise activities to connect you with other students there. It is here where you will receive the full American college experience – growing, making friends for life, and building your unique path to success.
