Midway University: A small campus with big personality

Many universities have beautiful campuses, but Midway University is the only one with a 200-acre campus that’s home to a working horse farm and an hour drive from the metropolitan cities of Lexington, Louisville, and Cincinnati. The best news for international students each city has its own major airport, allowing easy access to the university and other parts of the US.

Located in Midway, Kentucky, MidwayU has nearly 900 undergraduate students on campus, with 6% being internationals students from 22 countries. The community thrives within this small and intimate campus – with a farm and just a 15 minute drive to the metropolitan city of Lexington, and just an hour from Louisville and Cincinnati — with its eight student organisations, two honour societies, over 100 annual co-curricular activities. Beyond that, 27 athletic teams, including two equestrian teams, help spread the Midway Eagles – the university’s mascot – spirit.

Student Maxine Noel from France was recruited into the Midway Eagles Men’s Football Team and was quickly welcomed into the MidwayU community, spending every day with his teammates and classmates. “Being here is like home for me now because I’ve been spending two years here,” says Noel. “Every time I go back home, I kind of miss the campus.”

Outside of the university, Midway is a quaint town with a historical background. The town was founded in 1830 by the Lexington and Ohio Railroad and served as a midway point to Lexington and Frankfort. The train still runs through town and the campus daily, surrounded by the bustling life that the unique boutiques and great restaurants bring to the atmosphere. Recently, Lexington was ranked the #3 Most Friendly City in the US by Conde Nast Traveler’s Readers’ Choice Awards 2023.

Academically, MidwayU offers more than 25 career-focused programmes and pre-professional courses. Class sizes here are kept small to ensure a personalised teaching experience, where the 15:1 student-to-faculty ratio allows students to receive the full attention of their lecturers.

Programmes here are reasonably priced too – the university is known as one of the most affordable private universities in central Kentucky with 99% of traditional undergraduate students receiving financial aid. MidwayU’s online programmes in education, healthcare administration, marketing communications, nursing, and psychology are some of the most inexpensive. The university’s online MBA programme is ranked within the top 10 most affordable master’s programmes by three separate sites.

Providing a value-for-money education doesn’t mean the university skips out on keeping the quality of life up high..

MidwayU firmly believes in investing in its campus resources to benefit all students, especially given its eight consecutive years of enrollment growth. Since 2018, the university has completed several construction and renovation projects without incurring any new debt, thanks to multiple grants and gifts by various organisations and board trustees.

Recent projects include constructing the athletic Hunter Field House, renovating and converting Pinkerton Hall (the first building on the campus since the university’s beginning) into residential living, and renovating the original campus library, Marrs Hall, to the president’s office. New buildings that have popped up on campus over the years also include the Ann J. Bowling Welcome Centre, the 150-seat Tracy Farmer–Don Ball Stadium for baseball, a new barn and equine education centre, new tennis courts, and the renovation of all bathrooms in Belle Wisdom Residence Hall and Buster Residence Hall.

In 2023, the university received a US$5 million gift from a board trustee and proceeded with a three-phase project to address its housing shortage and work to build a new library. In early 2024, they received another US$2 million grant for designing and constructing the two-story library. Aside from its traditional library and IT infrastructure offerings, the 20,000 square feet space will also house open study areas, classrooms, seminar rooms, stacks, work areas, offices, computer labs, an e-sports arena and a café.

Facilities aren’t the only way MidwayU is going above and beyond; the university is also constantly adjusting and offering new programmes according to the market demands and student interest.

Based on the growth of the sport management programme, the faculty developed a BS in Coaching and Leadership and a BS in Sport Marketing; the Fast Track Associate Degree Nursing Programme was created when the university saw students interested in nursing enrolling in the university with their dual credit courses meeting the nursing requirements and ready to move straight into the nursing programme. In 2024, MidwayU announced two new programmes: the Master of Management Information Systems and the BS in Game Studies & Design.

As one of 2023’s Leading Metro Locations: Hotspots of Economic Growth, MidwayU is the place to be to make your move into the future.
