Middlesex University Mauritius: A world-class education in paradise

Mauritius offers a serene escape from the hustle of city life. This island nation, nestled in the southeast of the Indian Ocean, resembles a living painting with its lush landscapes featuring oceans, mountains, and sugarcane fields. It’s a place that fulfils every traveller’s wish with a stable political climate, low crime rate, pristine air, and modern facilities like advanced healthcare, efficient transportation, and reliable high-speed fibre internet. The locals are friendly, warmly welcoming visitors with open arms. The island’s bilingual environment, where both English and French are widely spoken, makes communication easy.

It’s also home to Middlesex University Mauritius, which unlocks the best of all worlds for international students. Picture an affordable British education in a stunning tropical setting. As the second overseas branch of the London-based university, Middlesex University Mauritius is a hub for creative and personal growth, inclusivity, and global opportunities.

True to its roots, the campus nurtures a collaborative spirit, where its small, close-knit community allows students and internationally-qualified staff to build strong, personal connections. Networks grow beyond campus too, thanks to the university’s strong industry connections in fields such as banking, information technology, business, law, and media. These contacts are crucial in helping students put knowledge into practice through internships, part-time positions during academic terms and graduate employment.

“The university’s commitment to providing industry-relevant experiences has been truly remarkable,” affirms graduate Muhammad Abbas Peera. “I was able to experiment with what I learned in class and apply it to real-time situations, preparing me for the challenges of the professional world.”

True enough, Abbas completed his BA (Hons) Advertising, Public Relations and Branding programme with First Class Honours in 2021. His academic excellence earned him the title of Best Student in his cohort. Continuing his educational journey, Abbas pursued an MA in Place Branding at Middlesex University London, where he achieved top rank and was honoured with the “Best Place Brand Strategy and Visual Identity Award” at the Global Soft Power Summit. Currently, he applies his skills in Mauritius’s tourism industry, designing campaigns and strategies for companies. None of this would have been possible without the exposure he gained as an undergraduate student.

“One of the most empowering aspects of my time at Middlesex University Mauritius was the opportunity to engage in diverse activities,” says Abbas. “I even had the privilege of running the Out Loud podcast with the digital ambassadors, an experience that allowed me to showcase my creativity and leadership skills.”

Active participation in extracurricular activities played a crucial role in Jedidah Ellayah’s success too. The BSc (Hons) Computer Science (Systems Engineering) graduate’s involvement in the Middlesex community is highlighted by her participation in the PwC Code of Duty hackathon and her international experience at the Stanford ASES Summit, where she joined 35 students from prestigious universities worldwide. As part of a team, she won first prize in The Mauritian Innovation Challenge with a project on how generative AI can transform the educational sector for greater inclusiveness in Mauritius.

“From hackathons to a TEDx speech, Middlesex University Mauritius has allowed me to thrive in numerous ways,” enthuses Jedidah. “What stands out is the supportive learning environment and the student-dedicated events. But above all, Middlesex remains the witness to the birth of lifelong friendships.”

It’s easy to form connections in an inclusive environment. Middlesex University Mauritius is home to a vibrant community of students from over 40 nationalities, making the transition process seamless for all. The university offers robust support services for international students, from assisting with visa applications to ensuring a smooth arrival. This diverse, multicultural environment comes to life during campus festivities, whether it’s the vibrant Diwali celebrations or the lively dragon dance during Chinese New Year.

The full experience is unlocked to anyone who chooses one of the university’s many comprehensive qualifications. While Abbas opted to pursue the BA (Hons) Advertising, Public Relations and Branding, Jedidah went for the BSc (Hons) Computer Science (Systems Engineering) — both of which are top picks for creative minds or 21st century aspirants respectively. The BSc (Hons) Business Computing and Data Analytics is an equally popular choice for those with more future-focused aspirations. It covers the latest in the world of IT, including Augmented Reality, the Internet of Things, Business Intelligence, the cloud, data management, and visualisation.

More advanced options include the MSc Data Science and the MSc Cyber Security and Pen Testing. The former equips students with the tools and strategies required to make impactful data-driven decisions across various sectors. The latter focuses on the ins and outs of protecting digital assets and investigating cybercrimes.
