Marymount International School London: Where girls become well-rounded women

It’s girls first at Marymount International School London

Founded in 1955 as part of the Religious of the Sacred Heart of Mary (RSHM), Marymount serves to empower women through its education — and it began during a time period when no one else did. As an independent day and boarding school for girls aged 11 to 18, it champions young girls to strive to their full potential and become the changemakers of the next generation. It’s all part of its mission statement that guides its day to day: “Firm in faith, vibrant in hope, rooted in love, and one in service.”

It’s holistic education — and that’s the foundation of the Marymount experience. Here, students aren’t just limited to academic prowess, even if they’re the standouts when it comes to results across the UK. They’re artists who unleash their creativity through performing and fine arts; athletes who exercise physical activity not only for sport but for mental clarity; engaged community members who tackle social and environmental issues to foster a better world for all.

They’re leading in the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma results, with students last year earning a 100% pass rate and a higher-than-global-average score of 36 points. It remains the only IB school in the UK that consistently ranks in the top 10% globally.

This excellence is due, in no small part, to it being an all-girls school. It’s been studied that 60% of graduates from all-girls schools gain higher self-confidence in comparison to those from co-educational schools. Students from all-girls schools are also more likely to consider majoring in math, science, and technology, and Marymount’s clearly has no shortage of that. From rigorous learning to outstanding results, its students are thriving at the top universities across the world: Keio University (Japan), University of St Andrews (UK), Northeastern University (US), and more.

Academics at Marymount are not only holistic but student-led. Through the globally-recognised IB curriculum, consisting of the IB Diploma and the Middle Years Programme (MYP), students are guided by dedicated teachers throughout their whole development journey. It’s an environment that nurtures independence in young girls; a comfortable space of small-sized classes where students aren’t afraid to be curious, critical, and expressive with their ideas and opinions.

The journey starts with the MYP, which takes place in grades six to 10. It’s the foundation to the future; the grounds on which students build conceptual understanding and the approaches to learning (ATL) skill set. They’re challenged through eight broad subject groups which are rooted in tackling global challenges, and a research project of their choice.

Once they’ve mastered the fundamentals, they’ll move on to the IB Diploma programme which is designed to prepare them for the next chapter of their lives — university and the real world. This is where students conduct presentations, collaborative projects, research, and many rigorous activities that will equip them with a global mindset. Here’s the key to unlocking their entrance into some of the top universities in the world; an interdisciplinary, multi-modal learning approach where they’ll complete a course from six subject groups alongside extensive volunteer activities.

The best part about learning at Marymount? It takes you beyond the classroom. It’s impossible for students to forge a global mindset sitting idle in classrooms, which is why the school offers extracurricular clubs, sports, and trips which deepen their roots in the community. From student council to Model United Nations, to educational trips, to drama, sports, and more — the girls of Marymount come into their own through the freedom to explore their interests and explore realms of activities that they’ve never been able to before. In the nature of a single-sex school, girls aren’t confined to any and all gender stereotypes. They have room to step into leadership positions and explore whatever field they please with no judgment.

It all ties back to the school’s goal of developing a strong worldly awareness and social consciousness in their students. At its campus nestled in the charming area of Kingston upon Thames, students have many opportunities to interact with people from different cultures, countries, and upbringings that they wouldn’t have otherwise had they not gone to Marymount. The Global Network connects 19 Marymount schools together, allowing both students and teachers in New York, Los Angeles, Mexico, Rome, Paris, Portugal, Colombia, and Brazil to exchange the beauty of their cultures. Marymount London alone has a student body that represents 48 nationalities and 15 spoken mother tongue languages.
