Lewis University: A great investment in your future

What gives a graduate from Lewis University an edge? Ask Jonathan Kimari from Kenya and he’ll give you a list. At the top, you’ll find two words: career readiness.

His journey here started, like many international students, through a recommendation from friends who had good things to say about the comprehensive, Catholic university located 35 miles southwest of Chicago.

“I learned about Lewis through friends who had also studied there,” Kimari says. “My family and I were searching for a school near Chicago that would provide me with an advanced MBA education with a speciality in international finance. Lewis was the perfect fit.”

Kimari’s decision proved fruitful. Having completed his degree, he obtained authorisation to complete his Optional Practical Training as a Financial Analyst in Chicago. “I will be able to use what I learned at Lewis in this position and ultimately bring this experience back to Kenya where these services are much needed,” he says.

Lewis University combines the liberal arts and professional preparation, fostering well-rounded graduates equipped to succeed in today’s dynamic world. Recognised by US News & World Report, The Princeton Review, and other esteemed organisations, Lewis University has a reputation for producing competent and compelling graduates, highly sought after by employers in the US and abroad. As many as 96% of 2021 graduates with a bachelor’s degree were employed and/or attending graduate school.

With over 80 undergraduate programmes, 35 graduate programmes, and accelerated options for working adults, Lewis University caters to diverse interests. The Colleges of Aviation, Science and Technology, Business, Education and Social Sciences, Humanities, Fine Arts and Communications, and Nursing and Health Sciences offer a wide range of specialised options, ensuring you find your perfect fit.

All 6,500 students across the various levels of study have equal access to internship opportunities and faculty connections with global companies within the Fortune 500, including American Express, Amazon, JPMorgan Chase and many more.

This is all thanks to the Career Services Centre. It hosts events like the annual “Career Expo 2024,” connecting students with potential employers and internship opportunities. What’s more, dedicated counsellors offer keen guidance, including tailored support for international students navigating the complexities of CPT and OPT employment. CPT and OPT refer to two types of practical training available for international students on F-1 visas. This commitment has resulted in placement rates that exceed 85% for international students in some programmes.

This is something Kimari benefitted from firsthand. “I used the Career Services Centre to help me write my resume and create a LinkedIn profile,” he says. “They also helped me prepare for the Career Expo by practising interview questions and reviewing the companies that would attend.”

All that training made Kimari confident and, more importantly, prepared for the Expo. The result? He landed his first internship during his first year at Lewis University.

Nneka Oladayo, an MS Health Information Management who recently secured an internship, agrees.

“In my second semester, my professor introduced me to a local company that provided transportation and safety expertise to medical logistics,” he says. “I first met with the Career Services counsellor, who explained that CPT internships can help me gain additional experience in relation to my degree. The counsellor guided me through the application and hiring process, making it easy for me.”

Oladayo has completed two months of his internship and hopes to remain there full-time after graduation.
