It’s easy to feel like a fish out of water when you move from one country to another. For Isaac, moving from China to the US to attend Houghton Academy in New York State was a challenge filled with unfamiliarity. He didn’t know anyone, his English wasn’t the best, and the culture was far removed from his own.
The good thing, though, was that he wasn’t alone.
“I didn’t expect the teachers at school, including the principal, to care about me so much,” Isaac says. “They not only brought me warmth and encouragement but also actively helped me overcome my struggles. When I faced difficulties, they were like parents to me.”
There’s no sugarcoating the pains of homesickness — especially when you’re young. Houghton Academy knows this well, so they do the most to put their students at the front and centre of their support systems, both academic and personal. For parents looking for a college preparatory school, rest assured, your children are safe and welcome here.
“It was hard in the beginning, but the school welcomed me with open arms by checking how I am, cared for me, and gave me lots of love,” says MingSum Lee, a student from Hong Kong.
Guiding students to the world’s top universities
Students from over 60 countries have traversed the continents to attend the private, international school nestled in lush, rural Allegany County. And as soon as they arrive, they can see how inclusive and personalised it is. Whether it’s within or beyond classrooms, during or after school hours, the academy goes above and beyond to meet the unique needs of international students.
This is only possible when you have a set of highly skilled and passionate teachers, and the academy does – this being reflected in how scores of graduates have been accepted across various prestigious public and private colleges in North America, including names such as Princeton, Cornell, UC Berkeley & Purdue University.
It all starts with the Personalised Education Plan. It addresses students’ current and future needs, considering whether extra English practice or specialised help in individual classes is required. TOEFL & SAT/ACT preparation support are also available. Having teachers keen on one’s success ensures students make the most of the academy’s diverse offerings: four diploma tracks, 250 courses, and over 150 free university dual-credit courses in partnership with Houghton University.
Tutoring, counselling, and college application are just as customised to a student’s needs. For example, the Director of Guidance and Student Success works closely with all students individually and in groups. Each student receives guidance on the proper mix of classes and activities to maximise their GPA and help with testing, application, and references. This assistance available at every step of this complex process has led to a 100% acceptance rate among Academy graduates.
Home away from home
On most days, Isaac is busy and fulfilled. As the president of the Ultimate Frisbee Club and the Woodworking Club, he’s got loads to do. But his favourite is Fitness Club. “Every time I complete my daily fitness goals, I feel a strong sense of accomplishment,” he says. “Fitness not only improves my physical strength but also brings positive changes to my mental state. It truly has the power to transform a person. Through consistent exercise, I feel more confident, focused, and energised.”
The same can be said about the academy’s full suite of extracurricular activities. Whether it’s basketball or soccer, worship club, or internships, students here have many ways to grow a well-rounded set of skills. On weekdays, they could be joining clubs focusing on global awareness, sports teams, and community service projects. On weekends, they’re checking out local attractions and US cultural sites.
For international students, these activities add another advantage: a less formal, but highly effective way to integrate and connect with the school community.
“I joined basketball, worship team, fitness club, soccer manager, and there are way more club options!” says Lee. “I really enjoyed it because it helped me grow and gave me time with my friends.”
When the day ends, all students return to their home away from home. Students stay in either a dorm or homestay, whichever is best suited to their needs.
Home Dorms, led by a married couple, give teenagers their personal space as well as homework help, medical support, game night, cooking/baking parties, and just time to chat. Homestays pair international students with an American family, giving them the added benefit of round-the-clock English, plus the extra warmth and care of being in a traditional home.
In both options, students receive a safe, orderly and affirming atmosphere that provides opportunities for academic support, personal growth, and lifelong friendships.
“Studying abroad in the US is not just about adding a layer of prestige to your diploma,” Isaac says. “Through these experiences, you will not only gain knowledge but also develop problem-solving skills, ultimately becoming a more mature version of yourself.”
