San Diego State University

San Diego State University has grown to become a leading public research institution. Since its founding in 1897, the oldest higher education university in San Diego, California, was classified as an R1 research institution in 2025 for its dedication to investigating, studying, and finding solutions to global challenges. All departments take this research-based approach, including the Department of Earth & Environmental Sciences. 

Programmes offered provide research and practical learning opportunities. They train you to address major societal issues, including dwindling energy resources, climate change, environmental pollution and natural disasters from earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, and coastal subsidence.  

There are three ongoing projects students can get involved in. The first involves sampling the ocean floor to understand climate change. Next is uncovering underwater tar pits to discover clues about early Indigenous peoples along the Pacific Coast. Another team gathers rock samples in Ecuador to predict the next earthquake disaster.

North Carolina State University

North Carolina State University solves problems. The Marine, Earth and Atmospheric Sciences department offers a bachelor’s and master’s degree in Earth Science. The Bachelor of Science in Geology covers core knowledge areas of the geosciences both in and out of the classroom. Master’s students can explore from 11 themes related to geoscience. These include Climate Science, Earth Systems History, Geochemistry, Geomorphology, Geoscience Education, Hydrology and Water Resources, Marine and Coastal Geology, Quaternary Geology, Sedimentology, Structural Geology and Tectonics, and Volcanic and Magmatic Systems.
