Fayetteville State University: An MBA that empowers military students and working professionals

Samuel Ojo’s story, going from a military role to a business leader, shows how much FSU’s Broadwell MBA program can change your life. He took the lessons he learned in the military — overcoming tough situations and achieving goals — and used them to succeed in the business world.

When transitioning from the military to civilian life, he decided to pursue an MBA at Fayetteville State University.

“I chose the MBA programme at Broadwell College of Business and Economics because of its strong emphasis on STEM focused programmes which perfectly fit my career objectives,” says Ojo. “The MBA programme’s rankings, corporate and community partnerships set it apart from the other institutions.”

No matter the changes you face in life, Fayetteville State University is focused on providing a multi-faceted MBA experience. It’s an AACSB accredited, public university within the University of North Carolina System. The MBA programme’s excellence is highlighted with the program’s rankings: #3 in North Carolina by both U.S. News & World Report and Fortune Education, with the latter also placing it at top 100 nationally. The Princeton Review ranked it #40 nationwide by recognizing the program’s unbeatable combination of affordability, distinguished faculty and specialized curriculum focusing on high-demand business areas.

But where FSU and Broadwell shine most is how it takes care of its military students. Over 32% of FSU students are veterans, military students and/or families, and reservists. FSU is proud to serve the nation’s heroes, from the day they apply all the way to graduation and beyond.

Those who dedicated their life to service will find applying to FSU easy and all their needs met. Along with military counsellors, the MBA admissions team work with you one on one to know you and your goals, helping you to choose the right specialization for your career goals. Then, it’s time to start your higher education journey by building your degree plan with your graduate advisor and student experience specialist. You receive full support to ensure there’s no barrier in reaching your higher education goals. You have the option of taking classes online or on campus. There are industry networking events, career fairs, partnerships, research projects and the FSU Student Veterans’ Organisation, too.

“The most helpful support system was the availability and flexibility of faculty members in accommodating the military commitments,” says Ojo. “This continuous support let me continue with my education journey especially at a time of injury.”

By being military-friendly, FSU has produced many military success stories. There’s the officer who earned his commissioned title after graduating with an MBA, a specialist with military and soccer prowess, a sergeant who’s working towards becoming an army dentist; the list goes on. But it’s impossible to reduce what makes the MBA programme at FSU special into one reason.

It’s a culmination of things like having a high return on investment, proven by alumni reporting that they’ve had substantial advancements and salary increases in their career after graduating. Other things like they teach their students the latest technological and analytical tools, and round that with a clear view of the global economy. They’ve got state-of-the-art facilities, cutting-edge tech tools, and career services to prepare you for your next steps. Many students have a wide web of career goals to meet, so FSU allows for a customised educational experience. This means stackable degrees and certificates, and accommodations to the busy schedules of young professionals.

And that came as a benefit to Zametria Wall, now an FSU graduate. She took the chance to earn the Systems Applications and Products (SAP) Certification, while she studied for her MBA. That certification — now in-demand with salaries that often start in the six figures — gave her an edge that led a new job to her door. And the company in question? Mann+Hummel, one of the world’s largest companies for filtration systems.

As part of the Center for ERP and Advanced Analytics (CERPAA), the SAP Next-Gen Lab at FSU is a truly unique resource, being one of just 13 in the entire United States. It’s a place for innovation and learning, spearheaded by the passionate Dr. Murat Adivar. He teaches students from various backgrounds, including undergraduates, MBA candidates, military personnel, and even professors from other universities. Dr. Adivar has a remarkable talent for spotting untapped potential in his students and guiding them to achieve remarkable outcomes. This is evident in the lab’s impressive 90% pass rate for SAP certification exams, with approximately 200 individuals now holding this valuable qualification thanks to his mentorship and the lab’s resources.

“Being selected for the SAP Academy by Dr. Adivar was such a blessing to me and my family,” says Wall, who’s a wife and mom to two young sons, and a force to be reckoned with. She has experienced FSU at nearly every stage of the game; getting her bachelor’s degree, working as a student employee, then graduating with an MBA as one of the hundreds who’ve earned their SAP certifications.

“It’s not just the technical skills, but the work ethic that the FSU students bring,” says Joshua Speller, the Mann+Hummel plant manager. “They are independent, smart, and hard-working.”

While a huge part of their success stems from the students, it’s also in part thanks to the professors at FSU. They bring innovation to the classroom, and lead their students towards profitable careers and leadership roles. The MBA curriculum is supported by industry partners like AWS Academy, SAP University Alliance, SAS Institute, Deloitte, PriceWaterhouse Coopers, USAID, to ensure the programme aligns with market demands. Pair that with a whole slew of partnerships and collaborations, and you’ll graduate from FSU with your life changed for the better, as promised.
