Dalhousie University: Making your dream education accessible

To some institutions, being accessible is just a noble ideal; but to Dalhousie University, it’s a core necessity — one that paves the way for individuals from all walks of life to pursue their academic aspirations without constraint. Atlantic Canada’s leading research university believes true greatness is not achieved in isolation but through diverse minds working together. Through scholarships and financial aid, it opens its doors wider, inviting those from varied backgrounds to join its quest for knowledge and understanding.

Riasat Mahbub feels fortunate to be one of them. Growing up in Bangladesh, he found himself captivated by the complexity of how software systems are developed, maintained, and optimised to meet different needs. After exploring the basics as an undergraduate and briefly applying knowledge as a professional, Mahbub set his sights on going abroad.

“The opportunities and resources available at Dalhousie University made it an ideal choice for me to pursue my Master of Computer Science degree,” he explains. “I loved its focus and dedication to research. Plus, I was drawn to the facilities and opportunities it had reserved for computer science researchers.”

From the moment Mahbub received his acceptance letter, the wheels were set in motion. Without delay, he began applying for his study permit, finding a place to stay and virtually familiarising himself with the vibrant city of Halifax — all to ensure he was able to hit the ground running as soon as he arrived in his new home. With plenty of support provided by the university, he managed to do just that.

Mentors and faculty members offered invaluable guidance both within and beyond classrooms, ensuring Mahbub had everything he needed and more to make the most of his Dalhousie experience. First, they worked on lifting his financial burdens with a scholarship. The process began with the meticulous crafting of a research proposal aligned with his intellectual passions. Then, Mahbub underwent rigorous evaluation, navigating interviews and technical tests organised by his supervisor. Soon after, their efforts paid off.

“Securing my scholarship was a significant milestone for me,” shares the student. “Thanks to my supervisor, I was awarded based on my technical proficiencies and high research interest — this allowed me to focus solely on my research and coursework.”

As a master’s student, Mahbub got to immerse himself in a hands-on learning environment that transcends theoretical concepts. His computer science programme is experiential in every sense of the word, encompassing everything from real-world projects to cutting-edge research endeavours and engaging seminars on the forefront of computer science. For him, lessons in Natural Language Processing, Machine Learning, and Software Architecture and Maintenance have been the most intriguing.

“I believe each and every experience has contributed to my overall growth both as a computer science professional and researcher,” Mahbub shares. “The faculty members are knowledgeable and dedicated, providing mentorship and guidance throughout my studies.”

Looking ahead, he envisions a career trajectory fuelled by his passion for software engineering research. Armed with the comprehensive knowledge and practical skills cultivated during his tenure at Dalhousie University, he’s confident he will be able to bring his goals to life with agility and insight. “I believe that my programme has prepared me well for life after graduation,” Mahbub affirms. “I feel well-prepared to achieve my long-term goals, thanks to the knowledge and skills I’ve developed at Dalhousie.”

This is precisely the level of preparedness the university wants all its students to achieve. Hence why, every year, it awards millions of dollars in scholarships, awards, bursaries, and prizes to promising students. In doing so, they ensure every voice is heard, every perspective valued and every dream within reach.

For example, Shreya Sharma from India received two scholarships — the Women in Technology and Dalhousie Entrance Scholarships. “I have seen some of my friends who are very capable and hardworking but are unable to do well in academics because they have to juggle a few jobs to pay their tuition,” she says. “I am thankful that I got these scholarships and am able to focus on my academics.”
