It is a school’s duty to guide, shape, and prepare its students for the future. Few schools do this as well as Culver Academies, where students take advantage of its unique opportunities to become courageous leaders, lifelong scholars, and global citizens.
There’s 2014 graduate Kayla Miracle, one of the most decorated women’s wrestlers in US history at all levels. She’s a world champion wrestler and was part of Team USA at the 2020 Summer Olympics. At Culver, she was the first girl in its history to reach the Indiana High School State Finals before winning four straight national titles while at Campbellsville University.
There’s 2010 graduate Michaël Brun, Haitian DJ and record producer. He’s probably best known for his single “Positivo” with J Balvin, which became the 2018 FIFA World Cup’s theme song. While he tours worldwide, including at major festivals like Coachella, his career can be
Recent graduates are doing well too. Class of 2022’s Maya Jyothinagaram is now at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. There, she’s pursuing her bachelor’s in electrical engineering and computer science while serving as an Army ROTC candidate. Her skills and passion have opened many doors to her, including being a Sustainable Startup Advisor to the MITdesignx Dubai Accelerator and a student researcher in the Civil, Environmental, and Agricultural Robotics Lab at the Israel Institute of Technology.
Class of 2021’s Noah Tan is studying international relations and music composition at Stanford University. He’s got his schedule packed from being a student fellow at the Hoover Institution, a member of the rowing team, and the managing editor of the Stanford Journal of International Affairs. Class of 2020’s Amina Shafeek-Horton is now pursuing her studies in global affairs at the University of Southern California whilst being a Council of Women World Leaders Intern at the United Nations Foundation.
Class of 2019’s Mason Lohrei is now a defenseman playing for the Boston Bruins in the National Hockey League. It goes to show that any student can go above and beyond, especially the ones from Culver.
Here, the emphasis lies on a whole-person education. This involves rigorous academics, athletic programmes, extracurricular activities, and leadership development. The school offers 185 courses, including 49 arts courses and 26 Advanced Placement classes, as well as a dedicated entrepreneurship programme, the Ron Rubin School for the Entrepreneur. As many as are available too, giving students the outlet to grow together outside of their academics.
One of the biggest parts of a student’s time at Culver revolves around the Leadership Education Curriculum. It is embedded into every aspect of life here, whether in the classroom or outside, helping students understand the power of building teams to accomplish goals and reflect on their roles as members and leaders within those teams. This is how students grow to become good leaders and followers, a philosophy they follow even after graduating from Culver.
Culver is nothing if not for the people who grace their halls.
“Culver isn’t simply a place – it’s defined by the people who inhabit it,” says Jyothinagaram. She likens it to “the person who covers you up after you have fallen asleep on their bed, then sleeps on the floor. It is the dinners with friends and making paninis ‘as tall as my hand’ that may have ruined one of the grills. And it is when a friend smuggles a pizza into the health centre, then sits outside your window so you can eat together after you have been sick for a week.”
Like these memories, Culver’s qualities will remain with her and the school’s graduates far into their future.
