A study abroad destination with big city excitement mixed with adventure, spectacular sweeping views, and the world’s oldest living culture — that’s Charles Darwin University. The top 100 university is located in the Northern Territory’s tropical capital of Darwin, which is just as easy going as it is energetic. Just ask Kalyani Dawkhar, a Master of Information Technology student with big plans to dominate the local start-up scene one day. With innovative technology always a stone’s throw away, chances are she will.
Inspiring, distraction-free surroundings certainly gave the nature lover the confidence she needed to own such aspirations. “I’ve always appreciated the outdoors,” she says. “I like exploring new, yet historically rich places. I knew it was the perfect place for me to balance out the rigours of a high-tech degree programme.”
Farhana Afrin Mouni realised the same when she began CDU’s Master of Teaching programme at “Australia’s best-kept secret.” After years of working and living in Melbourne, she craved a change of pace that would not only resemble her upbringing in Bangladesh but advance her career as well. Thankfully, the move satisfied both longings.
“Darwin really is kind of like a secret,” she says. “While there are many opportunities, you’ll never feel the need to compete. Even as an international student, I managed to get a job as an administrative officer at the Department of Health with the Northern Territory Government.”
Juggling the study load of a budding educator and the full-time job of an overachiever can be tough, but Darwin’s welcoming nature makes it manageable. Farhana, a self-proclaimed extrovert, religiously dedicates her weekends to cultural immersion and productive exploration. CDU closes its study weeks with numerous horizon-broadening events designed by and for its multinational community.
Together, students take the bustling city by storm every weekend. The Darwin Waterfront is a popular choice. They equally enjoy visiting wave pools, restaurants, and the free events encompassing sport, art, culture, music and dance, many of which are held often. Of course, no one can say no to Darwin’s tasty cuisines either — there’s one for every palate. What more could an international student ask for?
CDU is the chosen university of tens of thousands of students from 71 countries every year. Thankfully, the university expands as rapidly as Darwin’s population grows. Its Darwin, Alice Springs and Sydney campuses are homes away from home for many international students. The newest can be found in the heart of Sydney’s central business district. Each campus is spacious, welcoming, well-stocked, and packed with approachable faculty members. This combination continuously maintains CDU’s illustrious reputation.
The university ranked in the top 100 universities in the Asia Pacific. It is five-star rated for both undergraduate and postgraduate salary and employment by the Good Universities Guide 2022. Graduates earn at least 5% more and are 10% more likely to land a job than the average university student (The 2020 Graduate Outcomes Survey National Report). It is also a five-star, top 10 university for first-in-family study (Good Universities Guide 2022).
Sushan Khatiwada is one of them — the first in his family to receive a formal education. He chose CDU’s Master of Business Administration Sustainable Leadership as a launchpad to start a social enterprise — specifically for the community of youths back home in Nepal.
Prior to joining, the thought of enrolling intrigued him for a while. “At the risk of sounding clichéd, the slogan ‘You Make CDU’ gives me the vibe of a welcoming community that treats all students equally, regardless of nationality,” he says. After receiving a postcard in the mail from a friend who had travelled to Darwin, intrigue evolved into a decision.
“My obsession with naturally beautiful places is what led me to choose Darwin. My friend showed me the picturesque scenery and I couldn’t help myself but choose Darwin as my next study destination,” he says.
