Centrally located in Southern California is one of its top private Christian colleges and universities: California Baptist University. CBU offers bachelor’s, master’s, doctoral and credential programmes at both its campus and online. Each aims to empower students to discover their talent and find their purpose.
But what sets it apart is its Christ-centred ethos and excellent teaching — the kind that equips students with the skills, integrity and sense of purpose that glorify God and distinguish them in the workplace and in the world.
This is evident at the Dr. Robert K. Jabs School of Business. Here, students evolve into upstanding business professionals thanks to a curriculum that upholds the notion that business can be done in a way that honours God and people while still making a profit.
Along the way, programmes empower students to reach their personal and professional goals. The MS Information Technology Management (MSITM) in fusing information technology with God-honouring values. The goal? Fostering moral innovation that benefits all. MSITM students have this at the forefront of their minds as they earn competencies and skill sets that will offer them a competitive edge in the rapidly changing IT environment of today.
By tackling 21st-century concerns in the fields of law and ethics, organisational leadership, conflict resolution, project management, cyber security, emerging technology, and disaster preparedness, the MSITM equips students to become professionals in the field ready to excel at all management levels.
Lenard Verde is one of them. “I’ve been involved in IT since I was a junior in high school working for a Riverside computer company until I decided to go out on my own in 1999. While running the business, I completed my bachelor’s degree at CSUSB in information management in 2001,” he shares.
In 2019, he decided to pursue the MSITM. “It was close to my home, and I was growing my business beyond supporting small businesses and [wanted to] have the credentials to prove it,” he says.
And he did. “The programme at CBU empowered me to look at IT management in a more strategic fashion rather than from an ad hoc or reactionary place. It gave me confidence to pursue larger accounts and proved to my clients that I have the knowledge and experience to handle their IT needs properly,” Verde says.
Verde now uses the knowledge he gained at CBU to help provide IT support services for PCs and networks and Microsoft 365 consulting services for medium and large businesses. He is currently the president of a company called Advance IT Corporation.
Such prowess is typical of The Jabs School of Business graduates. They boast an 82% Optional Practical Training (OPT) full-time hire rate. For more help with career goals, professional development, internships, writing resumes and job searches, they can turn to a dedicated Career Centre.
Rated #3 in top value MBA programmes in California (Best Value Schools, 2021), the Jabs School MBA is just as prolific in helping students reach their career goals. This programme explores finance, marketing, economics, strategy and organisational leadership in classes that model real-world working environments. Available online or on campus, the classes are small and interactive, the ideal setting for anyone to improve their networking, team-building and interpersonal skills while defining their unique business visions.
Such lessons ultimately train students to think, react and function like managers and leaders — and if you’re a CBU student, takes you around the world too. Through global business trips or opportunities for overseas internships, included in the tuition, MBA students get to connect theoretical concepts with practical experiences beyond the US and their home countries.
As part of the programme, students will learn from professionally accomplished faculty members, including successful entrepreneurs, managers, consultants, researchers, authors, business owners and leaders.
One student who benefited from their guidance was Vanessa Perez. She was interning at a local radio station when God inspired her to pursue an MBA. “I didn’t know it then, but God put this desire in my heart to get an MBA so that I would have the knowledge and background to help create programmes that support low-income women with starting their own businesses,” she says.
The Jabs School MBA helped her achieve this — and so much more. One of the most valuable things Perez took away from her time at CBU was “gaining the confidence I needed to accept I don’t have to know it all,” she says. “I was concerned going into the programme that I didn’t have a business background, but I was able to learn new things and do well at it. I loved that the programme was God-centred and incorporated prayer and the Word.
The Jabs School MBA paved the way for her to become the executive director of Time for Change Foundation, an organisation that provides housing and supportive services to homeless women and children, encouraging them to become self-sufficient.
Today, as they pursue their careers, many MSITM and MBA graduates have fond recollections of their alma mater’s stunning campus. The university placed third for “Best College Campuses,” fifth for “Best College Food,” and 24th for “Best College Dorms” in the Niche 2023 college rankings.
