Broadway on a budget: Where to get student discounts in New York

With Broadway tickets costing up to US$145, you might be wondering whether there are Broadway student discounts to help you afford the bizarre prices.

The good news is that there are several ways that you can score tickets at half the price or more.

Here’s where to find Broadway student discounts so you can catch these shows without going broke.

Use your Student ID

As a student, your student ID can get you great Broadway student discounts.

This is known as Student Rush tickets, where ticket prices will be reduced from half off to 75% off when you present your student ID.

Most tickets will cost around US$20 to US$30 each.

Each student ID is entitled to buy two tickets so you can even bring a friend along.

However, the only downside is that to purchase the tickets, you would need to do so in person, which means that you will have to be in New York or in the area.

Go on a Monday night 

On Monday nights, Broadway tickets sell as low as US$20.

Not only will you save loads, you’ll also be avoiding the usual weekend crowd.

But as these tickets are cheap, the seats go quickly, so be sure to buy yours early. 

Become an NYU student

New York University students offer  Broadway student discounts.

If you’re part NYU, head on over to NYU ScholasTix to buy your tickets. Prices go as low as US$18.

TKTS Discount Booths

This is one of the most common ways to score cheaper tickets.

TKTS Discount Booths are organised by the Theatre Development Fund (TDF) in New York.

These booths are set up to sell tickets for Broadway and off-Broadway musicals, plays, and dance productions at 20% to 50% off regular prices. 

The booths are located in the heart of Times Square and Lincoln Centre with tickets sold for same-day and next-day shows. 

Hiptix 

Hiptix is a programme organised by Roundabout Theatre in New York City.

Through this, theatregoers aged between 18 to 40 years old have access to cheaper tickets to all shows played by the theatre.

Joining this programme is free of charge, and you can buy all tickets at the price of US$30.

Each person will be allowed to buy two tickets for each production. 

TodayTix 

While there are a number of online sites selling Broadway tickets, TodayTix is one of the most well-known.

Though it is not used just to sell discounted tickets, there are many sales and discounts offered.

What makes this site great is that you can buy tickets ahead of time and skip the long queues.
