The creative industries are thriving, with exports reaching $1.4 trillion in 2022, marking a 29% increase since 2017, according to UN Trade and Development’s (UNCTAD) Creative Economy Outlook 2024. These industries also support nearly 50 million jobs worldwide.
While creativity fuels these sectors, business knowledge is crucial for transforming ideas into successful ventures. Look at designer Ralph Lauren, whose business skills turned his brand into a global fashion icon, extending into home decor and fragrances. Or filmmaker Ava DuVernay, who combined creative talent with sharp business strategies to launch ARRAY, a distribution company for underrepresented filmmakers.
For those eager to make their mark in the creative world, BIMM University offers an exciting opportunity. Founded in 1983 as Drumtech (now BIMM Music Institute London), it has since grown to become a group of colleges covering many areas of the creative industries, including performing arts, film, and games. In 2022, this group was formally recognised as the UK’s newest university for the creative industries.
With nine campuses across the UK, Ireland, and Germany, BIMM serves over 9,000 students from all over the world. Here, students get to specialise in various programmes such as modern music, performing arts, filmmaking, and creative technology — all ensure students gain the skills and knowledge needed to maximise their career potential in the creative sector.
BIMM University is home to four specialist schools that cater to various creative disciplines. The BIMM Music Institute, Europe’s largest and most connected music school, offers students unrivalled links to the music industry. MetFilm School, a globally recognised leader in film, television, and online media training, prepares students for success in the film and media world.
Performers College leverages over 30 years of excellence in training for stage and screen, while MetStudios is the UK’s fastest-growing school for games, animation, and VFX, equipping students with the skills needed for cutting-edge careers in digital creativity.
Together, these schools form a dynamic, multidisciplinary ecosystem that encourages collaboration across creative fields.
Recognising the growing demand for professionals who can merge creativity with business expertise, BIMM University recently launched its MA Business for the Creative Industries programme. The curriculum covers essential topics like finance, marketing, law, project management, sustainability, and digital communications, ensuring that graduates are prepared for leadership roles in the creative industries.
“This new master’s degree is aimed at those looking to conceive and manage businesses in the creative industries — a sector projected to grow to $3.4 trillion worldwide by 2028 and highlighted in the UK government’s recent industrial strategy,” says Professor Mark Irwin, Deputy Provost and Director of Postgraduate Studies.
The programme is flexible in several ways. It has two delivery options — full-time (one year) or part-time (two years) — to fit around personal interests and career aspirations. Students can choose from one of four tailored pathways – Film, Games, Performing Arts, or Music – as well.
What further sets this programme apart is its emphasis on the real world. The MA is taught by industry professionals who bring years of expertise to the classroom, ensuring students hone practical, industry-relevant skills. What’s more, students can complete a work placement, gain hands-on experience, and build industry connections – for which there are plenty, as the MA is offered in two major cultural hubs.
Located by the sea, Brighton is home to year-round festivals and artists like Royal Blood, Rag’n’Bone Man and BIMM alumni James Bay. Berlin is the undisputed European capital of techno music and every other genre imaginable.
No matter which city the MA takes place in, BIMM University provides a collaborative and supportive environment, with students from over 60 countries coming together to share ideas, creativity, and passion. The university’s inclusive culture creates equal opportunities for all students, cultivating a sense of community and removing barriers that might otherwise hinder access to new ideas. Just ask Grace Fellows, a student.
“Choosing to study an MA course at BIMM was enough reason to move from California,” she says. “The community and network of support have been amazing. I keep reflecting on how much I’ve grown, and it’s crazy! The tutors are awesome, and they really care.”
