For the first time ever, London has been crowned the world’s best student city, according to the rankings, released this week by analysts Quacquarelli Symonds (QS).

Montreal, which held the top spot last year, has slid down from first to fourth position behind Tokyo and Melbourne.

Not a single US city made it into the top 10 after a nationwide decline in students’ happiness with affordability, employer activity and student mix.

Asian cities have moved higher up the charts in 2018 with Tokyo reaching second place – it’s highest ever position.

German and Australian cities also climbed the rankings with two cities each represented in the top 10; Berlin and Munich, and Melbourne and Sydney.

The top 10 are as follows:

Rank          City Country
1 London United Kingdom
2 Tokyo Japan
3 Melbourne Australia
4 Montreal Canada
5 Paris France
6 Munich Germany
7 Berlin Germany
8 Zurich Switzerland
9 Sydney Australia
10 Seoul South Korea

Further down the rankings, the US’ best city for students is Boston, securing slot 13.

Latin America’s best city, Buenos Aires, rose nearly 20 places, from 42 in 2017 to 25 in 2018.

Canada’s Toronto at number 13 – joint with Boston – and Hungary’s Budapest at 49 also did well, ranking first in desirability and affordability respectively.

The QS rankings listed the top 100 cities for students based on student mix, desirability, employer activity, affordability and student view, as well as including university rankings.
