ANU College of Law: Advance your career with a Master of Laws (LLM)

If you want to be recognised as a highly-qualified legal professional with specialist knowledge and skills, a law degree from the Australian National University (ANU) will help you achieve just that.

Ranked 12th in the world for Law, ANU College of Law is internationally-renowned as a global leader in legal education. With a teaching approach that blends academic rigour with practical expertise, students at ANU learn from professional academics and guest lecturers with real-world experience.

Studying law in the nation’s capital, the city where Australia’s federal laws and policies are made, promises a range of unique learning opportunities.

For example, masterclasses are taught by leading legal practitioners from Australia and around the world, including Mr Guy Aitken QC, Chief General Counsel at the Australian Government Solicitor and Lynette Williams, Global Director for Client & Market Development at law firm Clifford Chance LLP in London.

ANU Law School’s proximity to the High Court of Australia, Parliament, Commonwealth courts and federal agencies grants students unparalleled access to members of the judiciary and government policymakers, many of whom are ANU Law alumni.

Postgraduate students undertaking the ANU Master of Laws (LLM) have the chance to take a course on federal jurisdiction law taught by former High Court Chief Justice Robert French AC, a Distinguished Honorary Professor at ANU.

“To have Professor French teach the students about federal jurisdiction is an enormous privilege and he has considerable experience and expertise in the law of federal jurisdiction, having served as a Federal Court Judge and then as Chief Justice of the High Court,” says ANU Law School Professor James Stellios.

The course itself has strong practical dimensions for students who aspire to be litigators and also considers deep conceptual issues about judicial power which will no doubt stimulate the minds of students,” Professor Stellios adds.

The federal jurisdiction law course is just one example of the opportunities available to students in the ANU Master of Laws (LLM). As an advanced postgraduate qualification designed to equip practising lawyers, aspiring professionals and recent graduates with specialist legal knowledge, the LLM is also uniquely open to both law and non-law graduates.

Through a flexible curriculum, the ANU LLM course allows you to tailor your studies to suit your career aspirations. With over 80 Masters subjects available, you can build your own degree by selecting from a range of contemporary topics in law, allowing you to develop specialised knowledge and skills in the areas that interest you most. Students also have the option to complete a specialisation in International Law, Public Law or Private and Commercial Law.

From international security law to cyber warfare – there’s a wide range of subjects to choose from. The interdisciplinary style of teaching and incorporation of contemporary cases and real-world examples ensures that students develop the practical skills needed to apply their learning in the workplace.

Furthermore, the strong reputation of the law school and its alumni are evidence of ANU’s commitment to producing job-ready graduates.

One such alumnus is Batzorig Enkhbold, an ANU Master of Laws graduate from the class of 2015. Batzorig is the youngest Deputy Permanent Representative at the Permanent Mission of Mongolia to the United Nations Office and other International Organizations in Geneva, claiming responsibility for the co-ordination of his country’s engagement in the UN Human Rights Council.

He secured this position after completing a Master of Laws (LLM) in 2015, which he believes, was the deciding factor for his successful run in the selection process.

“ANU is the top academic institution in Australia that offers a world-class post-graduate education in public international law and the courses managed to challenge me intellectually throughout the duration of my studies,” Batzorig explains.

Batzorig says that the completion of his Master’s was a demanding process but, in the end, the effort was worth it.

“LLM – just three simple letters, however in order to own them one has to go through ‘fire’ and believe me once you pass that fire, its flames will light the path for you for the rest of your life.”

Grateful to the ANU Master of Laws (LLM) degree for broadening his horizons, the course allowed Batzorig to advance his legal knowledge in the areas of law that interested him most.

“On a professional note, the international security law knowledge that I acquired at ANU was instrumental in successfully completing Mongolia’s membership in the United Nations Human Rights Council for 2016-2018 and my research and analytical skills have significantly improved,” adds Batzorig.

ANU has the highest level of graduate employability of any Australian university. Past graduates from the ANU LLM have advanced or entered careers in a diverse range of fields including law, international business, diplomacy, politics, public policy, humanitarian aid, banking and finance.

For students interested in studying postgraduate law at ANU, Batzorig offers the following advice:

“Nothing is impossible in this world for those who have the true desire and determination to learn and it is not about succeeding or failing, but the effort to reach one’s goal that counts.”
