Information Technology (IT) is a broad field with a diverse range of careers that are highly in demand across different industries.
With a Bachelor’s degree in Information Technology, you have plenty of great opportunities and can earn a good salary.
However, if you want to diversify your career options, enhance your qualifications or gain a leadership role, it is an excellent choice to undertake a Master’s degree.
A graduate degree from a reputable and highly-ranked university such as the University of New England (UNE) in Australia is the ideal path to follow to gain management-level positions in IT.
UNE’s Master of Information Technology is a postgraduate degree that offers flexibility so students can stay on track with their professional goals. It’s ideal for those who want to enter the industry without an IT background so they can gain a solid understanding of the field and become qualified for a broad range of positions in the private sector, government agencies or research organisations.
It’s the ideal stepping stone to take advantage of the exciting opportunities happening in this field today.
More than ever, companies big and small today are relying on computer software and IT infrastructure for their day-to-day business operations.
The advancement of IT is not only helping companies manage their businesses more efficiently but also bridges geographical divides and allow them to become players in the global market.
From healthcare to finance to education, IT is being utilised today in all kinds of industries and across various departments such as human resources and administration.
Therefore, there is an increasing demand for IT professionals today stemming from the growth of emerging technologies such as big data, cloud computing and information security.
According to the US Bureau of Labour Statistics, “Employment of computer and information technology occupations is projected to grow 12 percent from 2018 to 2028, much faster than the average for all occupations. These occupations are projected to add about 546,200 new jobs.”
“The median annual wage for computer and information technology occupations was US$86,320 in May 2018, which was higher than the median annual wage for all occupations of US$38,640,” reads the Bureau’s website.
As IT is a rapidly growing field with new technological advancements emerging every day, a Master’s degree will provide you with knowledge on the latest industry trends and new technologies so you can be at the industry’s forefront.
With a Master’s degree, you can expand your knowledge and develop more in-depth expertise of the concepts used in the IT sector.
You will also develop vital skills that enable you to become a changemaker and leader in the industry, such as project management, analysis, problem-solving, communication and time management.
If you’re interested in other areas of computing, the University also offers a Master of Computer Science, Graduate Certificate in Data Science and Master of Information Technology (Business), among others.
Specialised units, flexible courses and real-world experience
Under UNE’s Master of Information Technology programme, students can choose from specialised units such as artificial intelligence, management information systems, user experience design, web programming as well as computer networks and security.
All units can be taken either online or on campus, utilising a variety of educational technologies such as video lectures, online discussion forums and access to campus servers through remote desktop facilities.
They also have the option of choosing either a research project in the form of a thesis or undertake an information and communications technology project relating to a real-life case.
With a Professional Level accreditation by the Australian Computer Society and recognition in other countries through the Seoul Accord, this qualification also enables you to work in global markets.
Alec Shaw, a graduate of the programme, said, “I had settled on the fact that I wanted to do a Master of Information Technology and was looking around at different universities.
“I decided on UNE for a number of reasons. Everyone I spoke to about UNE, only had positive things to say. I myself have had a great experience with a different degree at UNE and the external facilities that UNE provides are incredible. Everything is extremely simple to use, and the whole system is very flexible.”
The programme also helps students discover new interests and expert faculty members are always supporting students on their journey.
As Shaw said, “My best experience actually started with my most dreaded unit. I found out that I had to do a literature review in one of the necessary units for my degree. I had never done a literature review before and was really dreading the idea of it. As such I put the unit off for as long as possible. When the time came that I had to enroll, I was still not enjoying the idea of it.
“However, the mentor/supervisor that I got for the unit was incredible. With his guidance and support, I not only completed the review and unit but I enjoyed it immensely! It opened my eyes to a whole new world of possibilities and it has definitely made me want to do more research based activities.”
