Lewis University: Making a global difference from Chicago

From Chicago land to a better world — some of the best innovations are being researched, produced, and implemented by the Windy City’s institutions. Lewis University is located just 35 miles southwest of downtown Chicago. Its students and faculty work on interdisciplinary research teams, partnering with local and international organisations.

Topics stretch far and wide. For instance: examining suburban nonprofit organisations and how their views on homelessness affect their services in the community. Seeking firearm education to prevent mass shootings in the US. Improving the detection of water contamination through a new biosensor design. Through a values-based and practical education, you will gain the tools and knowledge to make a difference in the world.

“Learning at Lewis has become more than just gaining classroom knowledge,” says Omar Khan, an undergraduate student. “The lessons we learn in the classroom have a purpose far beyond the campus. My professors at Lewis don’t just teach business concepts — they challenge us to think about the impact our decisions will have on a global scale.”

Today, Lewis provides over 7,000 students with a liberal and professional education that’s rooted in its mission values of knowledge, fidelity, wisdom, and justice. Founded in 1932 by the Chicago Archdiocese and Bishop Bernard J. Sheil, it started as a school for boys, called the Holy Name Technical School. It evolved into a more traditional arts and sciences curriculum after World War II, and by 1949, women were admitted as students. In the 1950s, it became “the first Catholic coeducational college in the country to feature an administration and faculty consisting of lay people.”

While the decades to come have brought many changes, the core of Lewis remains the same: using teaching and learning to strengthen social justice, community service, and ethical leadership. It offers more than 80 undergraduate programmes and over 35 graduate programmes in fields like Accounting, Nuclear Medicine Technology, Art Therapy, Media Production, and more.

Gaining practical, hands-on skills is guaranteed in every programme. If you’re a chemistry student, you’ll partner with faculty experts on high-impact research in cutting-edge laboratories — as early as the very first year of your undergraduate degree. Design students work in teams on real client projects, using emerging technologies to find solutions to their problems. In media production, not only are you receiving instruction from Emmy-award-winning professors, but you also have access to internship opportunities at CBS, NBC, MTV, and more.

Getting hands-on is a big part of a Lewis education here, no matter your major. They let you see first-hand why you should live with intentionality, aspiring to make a difference wherever you are. “The accounting skills that I’m learning at Lewis University are universal, but what’s unique here is the focus on using those skills for good,” says Amara Ochieng, an undergraduate student from Kenya. “We’re constantly challenged to think about the ethical implications of financial decisions and how they affect communities, not just corporations.”
