Swansea University’s School of Management is an innovative business school, with modern facilities based next to a picturesque coastline. It offers key subjects: Business Management, Accounting and Finance, Marketing, Human Resource Management, Tourism and MBA. There is a great selection of undergraduate degrees, postgraduate and executive education courses to choose from.
The School of Management aims to make a difference through research. In fact, the research environment is rated as 100% conducive to producing research of internationally excellent or world-leading quality, according to the Research Excellence Framework, 2021. This greatly benefits students as the latest research topics and case studies are incorporated into the curricula. You are taught relevant content in line with the latest industry and academic expectations, no matter which subject you are taking.
The Business Management, BSc (Hons) is one of the most established programmes within the school. It has a track record of transforming students into highly skilled and commercial-thinking business managers at companies such as Shell UK, Marks & Spencer, Bloomberg and Tata.
This degree features a selection of modules to choose from, allowing you to shape your academic pathway towards your career goals. A highlight is the Final Year Project, where you work with a company in a group consultancy role and gain experiences that will make your resume shine. A more advanced option is the Management, MSc, which provides a sound understanding of global supply chains and business analytics as well as core management concepts such as managing financial resources, operations management, human resource management and marketing management. Here you can also choose to specialise.
This BSc and MSc are accredited by nationally recognised bodies, which includes the Chartered Management Institute (CMI), the only organisation that can award the highest accolade for leaders and managers (chartered manager status). The Business Management (Marketing), BSc (Hons) also holds accreditations, including one from a leading professional marketing body, The Chartered Institute of Marketing (CIM). This degree fits those who seek roles such as marketing director, analyst or researcher, HR business partner, management consultant or business development manager.
However, if you want to be a tourism marketer, manager or planner, accommodation or attraction manager, destination manager or event planner, go for the International Tourism Management, BSc (Hons). For those who would like a programme that is still management-based but explores the opportunities and challenges of business in an interconnected and global marketplace, the Management (International Management), MSc, also accredited by CMI, is more suited to you. If you complete specific modules, you will qualify for CMI’s Level Seven Certificate in Strategic Management and Leadership.
This, coupled with expert academics who produce cutting-edge research and highly employable graduates, has made programmes here highly ranked. Marketing at Swansea University is ranked in the UK’s Top 30 for marketing and the UK’s Top 25 for Research Quality by the Complete University Guide 2024. Accounting and finance is ranked in the UK’s Top 25 for Teaching Satisfaction by the Guardian University Guide 2024 and the UK’s Top 30 for Graduate Prospects – Outcomes by the Complete University Guide 2024.
Even without a background in accounting or finance, you could undertake the International Accounting and Finance, MSc. This programme will accelerate you into your chosen profession — from commercial finance analyst to audit associate — anywhere in the world. As it is accredited by the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA), it includes exemption from up to seven ACCA Fundamental exams.
If you’re looking for an undergraduate option, there is the Finance, BSc (Hons). In this programme, you will blend theory, empirical evidence and practical application, to build essential transferable skills for the industry. You will also have flexibility with your modules, and the degree is accredited by the Chartered Financial Analyst Institute (CFA) with University Affiliation Program status (which your employer will know will have you prepped for CFA exams). The school realises the importance of employability and getting students career ready.
All the school’s undergraduate degrees include the chance to apply for either an industry placement or a study abroad year so you can broaden your horizons. Some programmes also have Level three or four entry pathway routes available for international applicants taught by The College on Bay Campus.
“Swansea University’s new Bay Campus occupies a prime seafront location, with the School of Management boasting purpose-built lecture and teaching spaces for both undergraduate and postgraduate students,” says Chi Yin Li, BSc Accounting and Finance graduate.
Li says that what he learnt at the university helped him get promoted to manager and win a startup competition. He is now manager at EFG Bank and founder and CEO of startup “TeenShare” Limited.
While Li credits the conducive environment, Mica Woode, Management (Business Analytics), MSc graduate, found the academic reputation and teaching quality integral. In her degree, she earned a solid grasp of dynamic business principles and management in an interconnected global community. “I am certain the MSc course, which is so focused on putting theory to practice, will put me in a good stead to get my dream job, be it in the UK or Ghana,” she says.
Woode found the career team within the school to be especially helpful with crafting her CV and cover letter and exploring career options after graduating. The in-house careers and employability team are available to all students.
For MBA graduate Eniola Oyebanji, it was the mentorship programme that gave her the right opportunity. “We were all paired with professionals in the industry who offered career advice and guidance,” she says. “I was paired with someone who had an outstanding career record in healthcare and life sciences. Her guidance, inspiration and support were instrumental towards my securing a Business Analyst role at NHS Cambridge Trust. I will be starting this new role after my MBA programme.”
Oyebanji notes that it was the endless support from her professors that made a huge difference. They transformed her thinking and understanding of leadership, sustainability, and corporate responsibility. Like many studentsat the School of Management,, she’s ready to take on the working world, face the challenges of tomorrow and start her dream career.
