What to consider when applying to a UK university

With the huge variety and prestige of UK degrees, the nation continues to receive a flood of applicants from all over the globe. Applying to university will be one of the most exciting, nerve-wracking decisions of your life- therefore, it’s hugely important to make sure that you’re putting in the right sort of leg-work.

While the application process may seem daunting, if you take your time and follow the procedure below methodically, it will start to seem a lot simpler than you first thought. Here a few tips to help you through this important process…

Do your homework

Applications to UK universities are usually made through the Universities and Colleges Admission Service (UCAS).  Through UCAS, you can search for the different universities that offer your course and find out their requirements. However, if the institution you have chosen is not acknowledged by UCAS, it is best to contact them asking for more details.

Before deciding on the five universities to you want to apply, ensure you have thoroughly researched each institution. Start early with this process and take your time; you are paying a significant amount for a degree so you want to make sure it’s the right one for you.

Check deadlines

It’s pure; it’s simple: check institution websites to find out when their windows for accepting applications close. Can you imagine the horror of spending weeks of your life working on an application only to find that you have to wait for another year? Don’t let it happen. Whether you get online or get on the phone- check those dates.

Know your documentation

The majority of UK universities require applicants to provide proof of their qualifications to ensure they are recognised by the UK. You may also need to prove the level of your English language expertise.

Proof of identification is absolutely necessary when applying to any UK university- you can use any kind of photographic document – for example, a passport or driving licence.

You will also need to submit a personal statement, which illustrates your best qualities, accomplishments and experiences to help prove you are qualified for the course in question.

Preparation is vital

The admissions process is competitive; some courses may require you to attend an interview or sit an ability test, so be prepared! A great way to prepare for an interview is to think of answers to all the questions the interviewer could ask so that you’re one step ahead. If applicable, bring some examples of previously completed work to demonstrate your talent.
