Uppingham School – a classic British boarding school founded in 1584 – is rich in heritage, with a reputation for offering an excellent, well-rounded education that shapes its students for success in the 21st century.
Uppingham prides itself as a national school with an international dimension. Over recent years, Uppingham has become increasingly popular with international families, with over 250 overseas students in a school of 800, including 180 who may not have English as their first language.
A full boarding school
Uppingham’s most distinguishing feature is that it is a full boarding school, with academic and co-curricular activities scheduled throughout the day, seven days a week. Of its 800 students, 97.3% are full boarders, who attend and live in the school full time, except for holidays and exeats. Its thriving boarding community and lifestyle is often one of the biggest reasons that international families choose Uppingham.
Local, national and international students all take part in whole school and house-based activities in the evenings and at weekends, as well as having time to relax and enjoy the company of their peers over meals and during study breaks. Uppingham is home to 15 boarding houses each with its own identity and values, allowing each child to find where they fit in the school and truly immerse themselves in their home from home.
Uppingham boards by philosophy, not expediency – to spend more time with their students and provide them with the richest and fullest all-round education possible. This profound approach to education allows Uppingham to have a community like no other. When they step through its historic Tower archway, they are not simply students at school; they become “Uppinghamians” and join a community that will support them for life.
Community spirit
Uppingham’s school community gives students a vital sense of belonging in an increasingly complex, fast-paced world – an aspect of the school that national and international students alike really appreciate.
The whole school gathers in the 19th century chapel each morning for the assemblies – the students applaud one another’s achievements and sing together on an almost daily basis; it’s where differences are celebrated and valued. Students are supported not only by the staff, but by one another – something the school has been praised for, particularly during the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Uppingham’s strong sense of community is truly felt in their boarding houses, which offer an immersive, family-orientated boarding experience that forges lifelong friendships, as well as giving students the skills, wisdom and compassion that will distinguish its students for life.
Learning for life
Uppingham is known for its academic excellence, with their curriculum uniquely placing emphasis on learning that is adaptable and valuable throughout each child’s life. Students develop the attitudes, intellectual habits and work ethic that will allow them to seize and maximise every opportunity that comes their way.
In lessons, students are stimulated with outcomes focused on exploration, debate and discovery. The academic faculty inspires intellectual curiosity and independent thought, encouraging each child to explore their own ideas and develop their passion for learning. Parents from all over the world choose Uppingham for its exceptional academic faculty and are more than assured when they see the intellectual vigour and independent thought that their children are inspired with.
Celebration of diversity
The school’s community is comprised of wonderfully diverse students; open and accepting of difference. Uppingham has no junior school or single dedicated feeder school, meaning that children arrive at its doors from a wide range of backgrounds. Everyone is new when they arrive, regardless of where they come from – a really important factor for international students who may be studying in the UK for the very first time.
Uppingham not only celebrates diversity within its student body, but within its curriculum as well. Its students are strongly encouraged to embrace the broader aspects of the curriculum during their time there, from the performing arts and music, to sport, to a wide range of societies that form its remarkable enrichment programme. Uppingham’s aim is to allow its students to actively pursue their passion so that they can navigate their own path in life, challenging and celebrating the individual to inspire them to seize every opportunity at their disposal.
Uppingham’s global outlook has seen Uppinghamians move on to a number of prestigious further education institutions all over the world; in addition to the significant number of students attending competitive UK universities. Supported by incredibly knowledgeable and experienced academic staff who fully understand international university application processes, many of the school’s students have gone on to study abroad at universities in the US, Canada, Europe, Asia and beyond.
