University of Regina: Explore science, experience belonging, excel worldwide

Alejandro Sich, a biology graduate, remembers walking into his first lab at the Faculty of Science at the University of Regina, unsure of what to expect but eager to learn. He quickly realised that, here, his curiosity was welcomed rather than lost in the crowd.

“At this mid-size university, you’re not just a number,” he says. “You’re part of a supportive environment where people want to lift you up.”

The sense of belonging is what draws students in and keeps them thriving. Whether it’s professors who know your name, classmates who turn into lifelong friends, or countless opportunities to get involved, the University of Regina’s Faculty of Science makes sure every student has a chance to stand out.

Located in the geographical centre of North America, the University of Regina is an independent institution with more than 17,200 students from various parts of the world, 21 research centres, 10 faculties, and more than 200 programmes. Though the campus spans nearly a thousand acres, its layout is student-friendly. For example, most academic buildings, libraries, and cafeterias are connected within a circular road system, making it easy to get from one class to another in just a few minutes.

“The campus is super easy to navigate, it’s basically a big circle,” says Raveen Tehara, a graduate from the Math Department. “You never feel lost here.”

Life in the city of Regina add another layer of appeal. As one of Canada’s most affordable cities, it’s easy for students to find housing options both on and near campus. Being close to class and clubs makes for a more close-knit experience.

This sense of connection extends to the Faculty of Science. As a welcoming home for those aiming for careers in research or industry, this is where students come from different cities, countries, and backgrounds in pursuit of one thing: a passion for discovery. In labs, classrooms, and research projects, the faculty nurtures that spark. Professors encourage you to ask questions, explore possibilities, and grow as a thinker — something Sich knows well. “Everyone here is incredibly kind and patient,” he says. “They genuinely want to help you succeed.”

One way the faculty supports this success is through hands-on learning. There are 17 undergraduate science programmes ranging from Arts and Science to Biology, Chemistry-Biochemistry, Computer Science, Data Science, Geology and Environmental Geoscience, Mathematics, and Physics. All are experiential. In geology, this might mean exploring the natural world through fieldwork or discovering fossils in campus walls. In mathematics, it could involve a funded summer research project with a faculty member. Cooperative education also allow students to step into real workplaces while earning an income. These placements not only provide insight into future career paths but also strengthen resumes before graduation.

No matter the subject, these experiences will help link theory with practice. Smaller lab sizes further enhance this, enabling more one-on-one guidance than one might get at larger universities. For Tehara, this made a lot of difference. “I really appreciate how tight-knit the community is,” he says. “Everyone’s connected, and the professors are always willing to help.”

Research is another area where the Faculty of Science shines. It is among the most research-intensive units at the University of Regina. Faculty members are deeply engaged in their fields, contributing knowledge that has an impact both globally and locally. Undergraduate and graduate students often find themselves working alongside professors, gaining mentorship and developing critical research skills.

Bachelor of Science Honours students, for example, complete research projects as part of their programmes. Many professors hire undergraduate assistants during the spring and summer semesters — stints that let students reinforce their learning. Outside the university, students can also find science-related work placements with government agencies or private companies.

“There are tons of research opportunities within science, which is a huge advantage for students,” Tehara says.

By final semesters, students would have built portfolios that showcase both technical knowledge and practical skills. This preparation opens various paths, whether it’s staying on for more advanced degrees at Regina or at oaher institutions, or landing roles at companies like Provincial Health Lab, Farm Credit Canada, Microsoft, Ducks Unlimited, and more.

In the end, despite the extensive programmes, hands-on learning, and research opportunities, what students often remember most is the people. For Sich, it was the faculty members, teaching assistants, and lab instructors who had the biggest impact on him. “They’re the ones who make it amazing,” he says.
