University is a special chapter in your life. And where you choose to spend these years should live up to that. A place that inspires you but also feels like a home away from home.
For many students, Brighton is that city. Jahla Wilson, who has always wanted to study abroad, knew she wanted somewhere that felt completely different from home. “I chose the University of Brighton because I love the beach and the city landscape here,” says the student from Ohio, the US.
Wilson completed the semester two study abroad programme at the University of Brighton last year. She loved how lively the city is, the stunning the seaside views, and the sense of belonging. “Brighton is smaller than London, but not too small that I felt like everyone would know each other and I would then be an outsider,” she says.
Her advice for anyone considering a study abroad programme at Brighton? “I would say to take the leap and do it. It’s going to be a little bit scary at first, but you’re going to meet some of the most amazing people you’re ever going to come across in your life. By the end you’re never going to want to leave.”

A city like no other for students
Brighton has built a reputation as one of the UK’s most welcoming cities for students. Ranked among the top 100 student cities worldwide and in the top 25 for student satisfaction (QS Best Student Cities 2026), it’s easy to see why. Time Out even lists Brighton among the top 50 cities globally, naming it the happiest city in the UK and the third most diverse and inclusive city in the world (Time Out, 2025).
Walking along its beach, wandering the winding streets of the Lanes, or relaxing in its independent cafés, you quickly feel the energy and creativity that make the city unique. And you’ll soon see just how many students call this place home (about 14% of residents here). Flushed with fresh ideas, Brighton is a place where students have the opportunity to get involved in projects that spark creativity and have real impact.
It wouldn’t be a UK university adventure without festivals – for which Brighton hosts many all year round. The Brighton Festival and Brighton Fringe in May showcase bold theatre, art, and music, while The Great Escape introduces new musical talent from across the globe. Brighton & Hove Pride is another highlight, pairing celebration with activism in one of the UK’s biggest LGBTQ Pride festival.
Getting around Brighton is simple, there’s plenty of public transport including buses, trains and cycle routes. Travelling to the rest of the UK is also just as convenient – Brighton is just an hour by train from central London and half an hour from London Gatwick Airport. Many international students take advantage of this to explore other parts of the UK, or even hop on a cheap flight to Europe for a weekend adventure.

Study in Brighton, succeed everywhere
The UK is known for its world-class universities, so studying here even just for a semester or a year could have a huge impact on your future. The University of Brighton offers a junior semester or year-long study abroad programme where you can select classes from a variety of subjects across six diverse academic schools. You can choose modules in subjects that interest you, and also learn about British culture and history as part of your programme.
The British culture module deepens your understanding of British history and culturally significant events. You will gain theoretical and practical knowledge in cultural analysis, complemented by visits to famous castles, Roman palace ruins, and other local historical sites.
Beyond the classroom, you’ll become part of a welcoming international community. “When I first arrived, I was a little nervous. I was worried I wasn’t going to meet people. But then as I started to go to classes and open up a little bit, I made lots of friends,” says Thomas Sinclair from Canada. “I had a great time. All my professors were very nice and I loved all my classes.”
To make the transition smoother, the Study Abroad Office is there to guide you at every step. They can assist with immigration, accommodation, finances, and anything else you need to feel prepared and confident before you arrive.
