A unique international community at The College of New Jersey

With a history that dates back to 1855, The College of New Jersey (TCNJ) is a nationally-recognized public institution that primarily serves as an undergraduate and residential campus, with targeted graduate programs.

TCNJ places emphasis on the overall undergraduate experience, offering a strong liberal arts core and a plethora of degree-level programs. The College is enriched by an honors option and extensive opportunities to study abroad, while its award-winning First-Year Experience and freshman orientation programs have helped make its retention and graduation rates among the highest in the states.

“Today The College provides academically prepared students with a challenging undergraduate education and a rewarding residential experience, small classes, and a prestigious faculty,” the website explains.

TCNJ offers more than 50 bachelor degree programs recognized as being first-rate across a vast range of subjects from Arts and Communication; Business; Education; Engineering; Humanities and Social Sciences; Nursing, Health, and Exercise Science; and Science.

An emphasis is placed on five signature experiences which have become the hallmark of a TCNJ education. These include a personalized, collaborative, and demanding education; undergraduate research, mentored internships, and field experiences; community engaged learning; global engagement; and leadership development.

With such a disciplined approach to study and a vibrant campus teeming with student life, it’s no wonder that the US News & World Report ranks TCNJ as the No.1 public higher education institution in the region, also placing The College at joint fourth out of all northeast institutions.

TCNJ International College Prep Academy Summer 2018

Following the success of the 2017 program, the TCNJ College Prep Academy will be returning this summer and will again be hosted by the Center for American Language & Culture (CALC).

The College Prep Academy is a short-term, cultural learning experience that focuses on preparing participants for future study at US colleges and universities. Program participants learn about higher education in the US as well as preparing for university admission, all the while engaging in fun and culturally-enriching activities.

In addition to neighboring cities, students here can relax and enjoy themselves in the vibrant Campus Town. Here they’ll find plenty of enticing venues, shops and restaurants, including Lion Dog – the buzzing hot dog joint – as well as a pizza place, Insomnia Cookies, Japanese and Mexican eateries, and student healthcare and medical facilities.

“Campus Town offers much more than most traditional student housing options – it is a community within TCNJ that promises to give students a truly unique college experience,” the institution states.

Located in the Trenton suburb of Ewing Township since 1928, The College is mainly built in beautiful Georgian colonial style architecture, with the campus itself encompassing over two hundred acres and plenty of green spots for students to study.

Close to both Philadelphia and New York – the city that never sleeps – TCNJ students and College Prep Academy participants will not find themselves lacking in places for excursions.

“My friends and I love to hang out in Philly and explore. There are nights when we have so much work to do, but still find time to go get milkshakes and cheesesteaks there,” says Kevin Kim, Biology Major.

Those who pursue the program gain valuable experience and insight into what life is like on an “American” university campus. The cultural knowledge gained from the program aims to assist with integrating students into a US university environment.

Participants of the course strengthen their academic English skills by undertaking a variety of workshops and lecture topics. The course outlines how to prepare and deliver academic presentations, how to deal with time management, how to craft the best personal essay for admission and more.

Previous participants for the College Prep Academy program have been given exposure to US higher education by visiting six distinct universities. Visits to institutions such as New York University, Princeton, Drexel, University of Pennsylvania, Baruch College at City University of New York, and Mercer County Community College mean students leave acclimatized to the diversity of US university student life. Students will also get the chance to visit the Empire State Building, the 9-11 Memorial, and witness July 4th fireworks and festivities in the birthplace of the nation.

The Academy program will take place in the summer of 2018 from July 1st to July 21st, and applications are now open to submission.

What the International College Prep Academy and TCNJ can guarantee is a unique, genuine and diverse experience of university life in the US, at the same time as securing a valuable education.

“I loved that all members of this program tried to make me feel happy, comfortable, safe and welcome.  That is the most important thing for us,” notes one of last year’s Academy participants.

There is clear sense of modern community that permeates the campus at TCNJ; one which gives its students the specialist knowledge and life skills they need to attain their dreams. With the fantastic facilities, renowned faculty and vibrant student culture, TCNJ is a great destination for you to grow your international education.
