If you want to unlock the mysteries of life at its most fundamental level, push the boundaries of scientific knowledge, and make a real difference in the world, then Tulane University‘s MS in Cell and Molecular Biology programme is your perfect launchpad. This qualification goes beyond traditional classroom learning, offering a holistic approach that equips you with the knowledge, skills, and experiences you need to succeed in the ever-evolving field of biomedical sciences.
On this route, you’ll gain a broad understanding of the cellular and molecular basis of life while simultaneously applying these techniques to address challenges in medicine, technology, and environmental science. Throughout, dedicated faculty and staff will work tirelessly to create an atmosphere that encourages learning through a combination of engaging classroom lectures and hands-on laboratory experiences.
Tailored tracks for individual goals
The MS in CMB programme can propel you towards your dream career — regardless of your background and aspirations. Depending on your specific goals, you can choose either the one-year or two-year track.
The intensive one-year track provides a strong foundation in biology alongside clinically relevant topics like human anatomy, embryology, and disease — making it a solid choice for anyone keen on applying to Medical, Dental, or Veterinary school. You’ll even receive Kaplan-led MCAT, DAT, and GRE prep to maximise your chances of success.
Meanwhile, the two-year track can equip you with the essential laboratory techniques, scientific methods, and data analysis skills crucial for doctoral success or a career in the biotechnology or pharmaceutical industries. The pathway offers a comprehensive curriculum that includes core biological coursework, research training, and internship opportunities. With faculty advisor approval, you can even specialise by taking relevant graduate-level courses offered by other Tulane departments.
Regardless of your chosen track, you’ll gain invaluable exposure through the programme’s focus on professional development — think up to 50 hours per semester dedicated to service learning and shadowing opportunities at local hospitals, research labs, and other relevant locations across New Orleans. Exposure can do wonders — just ask Ifechi Okonkwo, who chose Tulane University for its focused efforts in preparing students for careers in healthcare.
“The programme has a service requirement which I really enjoyed a lot because we get a lot of hands-on experiences within the community,” she says. “I worked in the ER at the Tulane Medical Centre, where I shadowed a physician. I also worked at a Women’s Healthcare Clinic here in New Orleans.”
Indeed, both programme tracks go the extra mile to prepare you for academic and professional success. Through the Professional Speaker Series, you’ll gain plenty of firsthand insights from established figures. Physician assistants, physical therapists, and nurses will share their educational journeys, daily responsibilities, earning potential, and the exciting job market. You can also enhance your ability to communicate effectively with professionals and the general public through presentations in research seminars and Journal Clubs.
The best part? You’ll be paired with a dedicated faculty who will provide you with personalised guidance, track your progress and offer support in navigating your path to a career in healthcare. “You have really good advisors, and they take the time to sit down with you to talk about your personal goals, talk about how you can apply them here at Tulane and get the most from it,” confirms Ifechi Okonkwo. “At the end of the day, they really want to see you thrive in the healthcare career that you choose to pursue.”
A unique learning environment
Tulane’s CMB programme offers a truly unique learning environment that extends far beyond classroom walls. The picturesque campus, with its historic architecture and live oak trees, provides a stimulating backdrop for your studies.
Life beyond campus is equally exciting. New Orleans may be a city renowned for its rich culture and community spirit, however, for Tulane students, it’s also a living laboratory. Here, you’ll have the opportunity to participate in community service projects, research initiatives, and field experiences, all while contributing to the betterment of South Louisiana. With such initiatives in mind, it’s little wonder why Tulane graduates emerge prepared to navigate diverse career paths and primed to make a global impact.
“We have students in our programme that pursue other careers outside of medicine such as dentistry, PA school or PhD programmes and genetics counselling, which I really appreciated because we engage in a very rigorous coursework,” says Ifechi Okonkwo.
