Top 10 UK universities that produce the most CEOs

Do you dream of becoming a CEO and running your own company in the near future? Success in the competitive business world not only relies on hard work, creativity, and determination, but it also involves being at the right place at the right time, and knowing the right people.

This is where universities come in – it is during their studies that many of the world’s top entrepreneurs and business people came up with their million-dollar ideas or met with influential people they would one day collaborate with.

If you’re aiming to become the next Elon Musk (Tesla Motors and SpaceX) or Larry Page and Sergey Brin (Google), then perhaps you should consider enrolling at these U.K. universities.

The list was put together by emolument.com, a crowdsourced pay-data website, which analysed data from 26,000 graduates of U.K. universities to identify the institutions which were most likely to yield successful business leaders such as chief executive officers, chief technology officers, or partners.

In a press release, Emolument.com said: “Our data shows that employers are more likely to look for hands-on graduates and employ professionals without top academic credentials.”

However, the data only included graduates of Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees, and excluded MBAs.

Despite MBAs not being accounted for in the data, the London Business School (LBS) topped the list, with an impressive five percent of its graduates moving on to hold top positions in companies.

According to its results, the website noted that contrary to what most would assume, the largest and oldest U.K. universities didn’t exactly fare better in terms of generating successful business people.

“Regular chart-toppers such as Oxford or LSE do not feature in our rankings, as many of their alumni pursue careers with large corporations. Becoming CEO of Citigroup or Tesco is less likely than leading a start-up or SME, hence their notable absence on this table,” it explained.

Its data also revealed that as alumni from Sheffield, Brunel or Leicester University are less likely to be “wooed” by big banks or consultancy firms compared to their Oxbridge counterparts, they are thus “more eager to launch their own businesses or join budding start-ups”, allowing them to quickly climb up the ranks to reach leadership positions.
