The Ohio State University: Leading transformative advancements in engineering research

The Ohio State University College of Engineering conducts research that we need now. Researchers there fuse expertise, ideas, and resources in exciting and meaningful ways. The focus is on addressing real-world challenges and improving society — an approach that’s led to the development of minimally invasive therapies for patients suffering from chronic lower back pain. This creation features engineering nanocarriers (extracellular vesicles), which can reprogramme or revert diseased human intervertebral disc cells back into their healthy state.

Another innovation that’s propelling humanity forward? The MVAPICH communication software. Major supercomputer centres worldwide are using it to enable high-performance computing across various applications, including weather forecasting, new material development, and many other scientific discoveries. It has been integral in driving computational breakthroughs.

The college’s research is prolific, boldly crossing disciplines to instigate more discoveries. In medicine, there is the new collaborative Centre for Cancer Engineering. Here, engineers and clinicians converge to produce high-impact research, training, technology development and commercialisation.

Over at the Centre for Automotive Research (CAR), researchers are developing smart mobility solutions like vehicle autonomy, cybersecurity, connected vehicles and more. Manufacturing companies refer to Ohio State for advances in technology and processes, as well as the talent prepared to maximise both.

AI, whose impact is heralded as the next steam engine, is another focus area. The college is a national leader in the field’s research and development, with three National Science Foundation-funded mega-institutes using AI to solve global problems: the US$15 million Imageomics Institute, the US$20 million AI ICICLE Institute, and the US$20 million AI-EDGE Institute.

For its work in a broad range of applications and scientific disciplines, Ohio State has amassed awards and accolades. It is ranked among the world’s most innovative universities by Reuters, as well as sixth in industry-sponsored research and 11th in research expenditures among all US universities by the National Science Foundation.

The college is ranked 27th in the nation overall, eighth in Biological and Agricultural Engineering; 24th in Computer Science and Engineering; and 14th in Materials Science and Engineering (US News & World Report). “The Ohio State University holds a prominent position among the top-ranked programmes nationwide,” says Dr. Xiaodong Zhang, a University Distinguished Scholar and the Robert M. Critchfield Professor in Engineering. “We are one of the largest comprehensive universities in the country, providing a collaborative environment for many interdisciplinary research projects.”

Columbus, the capital of Ohio, is the fastest-growing metropolitan area in the Midwest. “The city has both high-tech corporations, such as Amazon and Intel, and major business corporations, like J. P. Morgan Chase and Nationwide, that offer diverse opportunities for career growth and professional development to students,” says Zhang.

Dynamic and affordable, the city is often cited as one of the key reasons behind Ohio State being voted the Best of the Best Colleges and Universities for LGBTQ+ students in the US (Campus Pride) and 12th among public universities for innovation (US News & World Report). The latter is a ranking that identifies universities with leading approaches to curriculum, campus life, technology, and facilities.

Opportunities to connect, collaborate, and apply knowledge are many and various. The school houses more National Science Foundation Industry-University Collaborative Research Centres than any other school in the US, maintains a long-standing research and scholarship partnership with Honda of America Manufacturing, and is home to the National Centre for Composite Materials, the largest composite materials research centre in the country.

Outreach events complete the college’s approach to transforming students into key contributors to society. Recently, the college’s Community, Access, Retention, and Empowerment (CARE) Office hosted the Ohio Children’s Cluster STEAM Powered Dreams, a Jack and Jill of America event sponsored by the organization’s Columbus Chapter. Around 20 student volunteers from Ohio State’s National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE) chapter helped with workshops that engaged more than 100 K-8 students from around Ohio in science, technology, engineering, arts, and math (STEAM) activities.

“The CARE Office is honoured to host an event such as this,” said Director for Student Academic Success Gisell Jeter-Bennett. “It speaks to the core values of the college and a land-grant institution. It is our duty to educate, engage and empower citizens of the Buckeye State.”

Such events go a long way in equipping students with the personal skills to do more and dream bigger. “Many of our international alumni have gone on to become established professors at top universities such as Georgia Tech, UCLA, UCSD, and others,” says Zhang. “Additionally, numerous graduates have assumed leadership roles with major IT companies like Google, Microsoft, and NVIDIA, making significant contributions to technological advancements and innovation.”
