Do you fancy studying in the best university system in the world? Would you like a qualification that is globally recognised? The reason we ask is because tuition, room and board at university in the United States can cost anywhere between $15,000 and $40,000 depending where it is you choose to study. Got a spare $40,000 lying around? No? Well, that certainly is unfortunate, but the good news is there are tonnes of things you can do to make your American dream a reality.

There’s no denying that studying in America is a huge financial commitment, but the knowledge you’ll gain, the friends you’ll make and the memories you’ll share along the way are sure to change your life forever. That being said, what is it exactly that constitutes a good value education?

American national pride is utterly infectious, and no other nation in values education quite like the Americans. These figures may seem a little daunting, but the truth of the matter is that a little extra cash spent on your tuition might be the best decision you’ll ever make. Whatever you decide, the road to higher education requires careful planning. With that in mind, here are a few things international students can do to get the best bang for their educational buck in the United States:

Make a Budget

When calculating the annual cost of a U.S education at a particularly good University or College, adding at least $6,000 to the published cost of tuition, fees and board will provide you with a more realistic estimate. Most Universities detail helpful information about their fees and other costs on their websites, and have dedicated staff on hand to answer your questions. Don’t be shy- send them an email!

University costs, required admissions tests and other useful information can be found in the International Student Handbook of U.S Colleges. Your local library might have a copy for you to browse, or you can easily buy one online.

If you bring other family members, you can assume that your annual expenses will increase by 15%, or $5,000 for each additional family member.

There are a whole host of websites that give useful tips on how to save money whilst on campus, such as where you can buy second hand textbooks. Be a savvy saver- do your research before you go.

Find Out About Financial Aid

As a rule in the U.S, it is harder for international students to get scholarships or other forms of financial aid than for domestic students, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t possible. One of the best sources for financial aid whilst you study in the U.S are organisations from your home country. The nearest educational advising centre may have information about local sources of support. Some Universities in the States have exchange programmes with their counterparts in foreign countries, which often includes financial aid for international students. Ask your local University to find out about these programmes.

Of the few private scholarships for international students, most will require you to apply from your home country. If you are already in the U.S you might not be eligible, so you are strongly advised to research your entitlements before you arrive in the States. For example, one option for post graduates is the prestigious Fullbright Scholarship programme, awarded to 4,700 students every year, worldwide.

Some U.S schools offer desirable financial aid packages for international students; to find out more about scholarships and fellowships, research FinAid and FastWeb databases.

Get Help from Your Family

Studies have shown that 7% of undergraduate international students finance their studies from their own resources, or resources obtained from their family.  The majority of international students are actually funded from sources back in their home country. A few U.S banks will offer student loans to international students if the loan is co-signed by a credited U.S citizen or permanent resident, also known as holder of a “Green Card”.

Study Hard and Enjoy the Experience

The harder you work, the more value you’ll gain from your qualification, and the more you’ll enjoy living in a new environment. If you work hard you can play hard, and it will make things a lot easier in the future. American Universities value the contribution of international students, so you are well advised to find out about the range of support services available so that you can make the most of them.

Choose Well

It is essential that you find a University that suits your needs and aspirations. There are a huge number of options in the American education system, so you are guaranteed to find something that’s perfect for you. Write down a checklist of the things you want from your education, and then get out there and find it!
