Study in Sweden: 5 scholarships for international students

Clinch one of the many Sweden scholarships for international students and you’re set for an exciting adventure. Its education system is among the best in the world and ranked first for sustainability. The country is a world leader in sustainability and tech innovation. It has more billion-dollar tech companies per capita than anywhere else on the globe — after Silicon Valley. 

Culture-wise, Sweden places a lot of emphasis on work-life balance. With one of the many Sweden scholarships for international students in hand, you’ll soon discover that it has no shortage of beautiful spots to visit, from the Stockholm Archipelago to Jokkmokk, a fairytale town located in Lapland, Sweden’s northernmost province. Sweden is also the land of equality — Swedish women make up 46% of parliament and 50% of the government cabinet.

It’s apparent that choosing to study in Sweden can be a great choice for international students, as the country is safe and welcoming, with high-quality academics. To boot, there are government and university scholarships that will make it possible for students to make their study abroad dreams come true. While many scholarship applications for international students have closed for 2021, here are five Sweden scholarships for international students to keep an eye out on for 2022:

Blekinge Institute of Technology (BTH) scholarships 

BTH offers two categories of scholarships to international students: one for prospective students and one for current students. The BTH scholarship programme for prospective students is available for citizens from non-EU/EEA countries who are required to pay tuition fees for Swedish university education. It is not applicable to students pursuing distance education.

This scholarship programme offers scholarships covering tuition fees in part. The level of tuition fee reduction is normally 50%, and the scholarships are granted on the basis of academic excellence. Priority is given to applicants with the BTH study programme as their first choice.

The BTH scholarship programme for current students provides a partial reduction of the tuition fee to students with excellent academic performance during the first part of their studies at the institution.

Students are eligible for the scholarship programme for current students if they are registered as a student on campus based programme at BTH, and have studied for at least one term.

Dalarna University scholarship  

Each year, Dalarna University awards partial scholarships to new, international, fee-paying master’s students who have proven themselves to be outstanding in their educational endeavours.

The scholarship is offered to citizens from non-EU or EEA countries who wish to pursue their master’s at the university. Scholarship recipients will enjoy a 10,000 SEK tuition-fee waiver for each remaining semester of full-time studies in the programme they are currently studying. The scholarship covers either 25% or 50% of a degree’s tuition fees. 

To be eligible for Dalarna University’s scholarship for enrolled students, applicants must have studied at least one semester (master’s level) or two semester’s (bachelor’s level) within a degree programme at Dalarna University, must be continuing the same degree programme for at least one more semester of full-time study and must have achieved at least 50% results.

Halmstad University scholarship

Each year, Halmstad University offers a number of scholarships to students from outside the EU or EEA and Switzerland. Unlike many other scholarships, the Halmstad University Scholarship programme is designed to support new students financially — without specific and rigid eligibility requirements for the programme. 

To be eligible, applicants must be an international students from outside the EEA or EU and Switzerland, and have secured admission in any of the university’s master’s programme.

This scholarship covers either 25% or 50% of a degree’s tuition fee, and does not cover living costs. Initially granted for one semester, it will be automatically extended for the duration of the study programme (two or four semesters) — provided that study results are satisfactory.

Swedish Institute Scholarships for Global Professionals

If you’re looking to enrol in a master’s programme, look out for the annual Swedish Institute Scholarships for Global Professionals (SISGP) programme.

The scholarship is available for citizens from 42 countries; it is intended for full-time one-year or two-year master’s programmes. 

“SI fully covers your tuition fees to the Swedish university you are attending. This is paid directly by SI at the beginning of each semester. You will receive a regular payment of SEK 10,000 to cover your living expenses throughout the scholarship. This payment is given monthly throughout the scholarship period,” notes its website.

Jönköping University scholarship

The Jönköping University Scholarship is offered annually on behalf of the Swedish government. The scholarships, intended for students who pay tuition fees, will cover 30% of the fee for bachelor and master programmes. Pathway programmes are not included. 

Only students who are applying to a programme from the start, are eligible. The study application must have been submitted before or at the same time as the scholarship application as the former includes important information and documentation relevant to the scholarship.
