Swansea University is a leading research institution in Wales that ranks amongst the top 300 universities in the world. Yet, its focus remains personal: your success. The results speak for themselves. 94% of graduates are in employment or study, or engaged in other activities such as travel, 15 months after graduation. No matter how niche or unconventional your career goal, Swansea University provides dedicated support to help you turn your dreams into reality.
Just ask Nidhi Potla, who was looking to pursue maritime law. It’s a field that governs nautical matters and private maritime businesses, and while it’s one of the oldest practices in the world, it’s also incredibly niche. The kind of knowledge and skills that you need to develop for this practice isn’t something you can attain through a traditional law degree.
Potla, who’s originally from India, would know this well. She considered many universities but could not find a programme that would allow her to advance her career in this field.
That is, until she found Swansea University.
“Swansea University’s programme is indeed an absolute mix of theoretical and practical legal aspects of the shipping world,” says Potla, now an LLM in International Maritime Law graduate. “I have a huge cohort of international acquaintances and friends from all around the world, and I feel privileged to be able to expand my network and horizons in the practising industry.”

Now, Potla is working remotely for a top-tier maritime law firm in Mumbai, and she’s not the only graduate who has built a thriving career. Over 200,000 Swansea alumni are either working or pursuing further education around the world, many going on to achieve success on both local and international levels.
There’s Anne Boden, the former CEO of Starling Bank, and the first woman to found a British bank. Oluwaseun Ayodeji is a campaigner, activist, and the executive director of the Stand to End Rape Initiative (STER), a non-profit organisation. Carl Jones stayed on with the university as a professor while serving as Chief Scientist of the Durrell Wildlife Conservation Trust. Jason Mohammad is now a radio and television presenter, and even got to be part of the pitch side presentation team for the 2014 World Cup final between Argentina and Germany.
Swansea’s holistic and personalised career support
To become a graduate with a competitive edge, you need real-world experience and transferable skills. That’s why Swansea’s degree programmes are designed to combine theory with hands-on learning and cutting-edge research, with many including the option to undertake a year of industry work.
For Deepak Aryal, MSc Cyber Security graduate from Nepal, Swansea’s curriculum helped him land his current role as a cybersecurity consultant at technology and cybersecurity consulting firm Arup. “The course content was highly relevant, focusing on real-world challenges, which helped me build a strong foundation,” says Aryal. “One assignment directly aligned with the technical skills required in my current role.”

Career support isn’t just limited to your programme, though. The award-winning team at the Swansea Employability Academy (SEA) ensures that your learning and professional development progress in tandem through career development and employment opportunities. It’s an open door for you to connect with qualified career consultants, alumni mentors, and employers through career fairs, events, and coaching sessions. Students from underrepresented groups can seek targeted support through Career Boost, a MEDR-funded project.
With industry partners like Bentley, Pfizer, Tokio Marine, and PwC, finding an internship, placement, part-time job, or graduate position is well within reach for Swansea students. SEA will guide you through the entire process, from developing your CV and interview skills to securing employment bursaries that cover costs like business attire and travel expenses, as well as internship funding.
If you need a more accessible online resource, the team’s got you covered. AI tools and resources are offered, ranging from CV and cover letter checkers to virtual work experience. SEA’s digital jobs board, Employment Zone, collates opportunities like internship placements, part-time jobs, and graduate-level employment across local, national, and international organisations. You can enrol in the Career Development Course and receive formal recognition in your Higher Education Achievement Report after completing 16 topical units too.
For those who want to become entrepreneurs, the Student Enterprise team is another university-wide service that challenges you to test your business ideas in various ways. It’s essentially your safety net when creating a start-up. Instead of diving headfirst into the unknown, you can participate in workshops, test trading, business mentoring, and more to bring your idea to life. Past participants have launched businesses in sustainability, biotech, nutrition, and more.
Once you’ve earned your Swansea degree, the Graduate Support Programme will continue to provide employability support, no matter how long you’ve left campus.
