Studying in the UK is a dream for many international students, but the higher cost can make it a challenging goal to achieve. This is where Swansea University stands out. Ranked among the top 300 universities in the world by QS World University Rankings 2025, Swansea offers international students the opportunity to study January entry Postgraduate courses without the overwhelming price tag.
The university is aware of the challenges students face and takes steps to ensure they do not feel alone in navigating them. Susan Mary Sunny from India joined Swansea for this very reason. “I chose to do my master’s International Business Management at Swansea University mainly because of the scholarships available to international students,” she says. “Another plus is that you can combine it with several other bursaries that are made available to us.”
A diverse range of scholarships and bursaries tailored specifically for international students widens access to the top UK university. These awards are financial lifelines that also open doors to exclusive events for scholarship holders, including senior networking opportunities and celebratory gatherings that mark their academic success.

There are several options available, starting with the International Excellence Scholarship. Each year, this award is given to students who have already shown academic excellence or have strong potential to do so during their time at Swansea. The scholarship is offered as a tuition fee reduction and can be worth up to 7,000 pounds. Students who receive up to 5,000 pounds in their first year may also receive a further 2,000 pounds in their second year if they achieve a 70% average.
Another option is the Swansea University Thrive Bursary. This bursary provides a 4,000 pounds reduction in tuition fees during the first year of study. Eligible students receive it automatically without needing to apply. For those continuing their programme, a progression bursary of 2,000 pounds is available in subsequent years, further reducing the financial load.
Financial aid is only part of the picture. The city of Swansea itself makes studying more affordable. Compared to larger UK cities, students save significantly on accommodation, transportation, food, and leisure activities. On average, living costs in Swansea are up to 30% lower than in London, excluding the difference in rent.
For Sunny, this was a major advantage. “Swansea is the most economically feasible option for an overseas student like me,” she says. “There are more part-time jobs available, and the cost of living is considerably less compared to other places in the UK.”

Practical support from the university strengthens this advantage. Swansea’s award-winning Money Advice team is dedicated to helping students manage their finances effectively. They provide guidance on student funding, hardship assistance, and budgeting, while also addressing the needs of those with additional responsibilities. Care leavers, estranged students, and student carers can access additional bursaries tailored to their needs, helping them feel supported and secure.
Support at Swansea covers all aspects of the student journey. The Visa Advice team, made up of trained immigration specialists, runs regular live-chat sessions and in-person drop-ins. These make it easy for students to receive help in a relaxed and confidential setting.
Daily life in Swansea reflects the same balance of affordability and quality. The city’s compact design means that students can walk or cycle to most destinations, reducing transport costs and making life more convenient. At the same time, Swansea offers a vibrant student community and access to the stunning Gower Peninsula. This blend of city and nature creates an experience that is both stimulating and affordable, giving students the best of both worlds.
For graduates like Deepak Aryal, who completed an MSc in Cyber Security, the environment at Swansea provided the focus he needed. “Unlike the buzz of big cities like London, Swansea offered a peaceful, calm environment where I could focus on my studies without distractions,” he says. “The coastal location was a huge bonus; studying by the beach was something I never thought I’d get to experience.”
