In many schools, grades are seen as the ultimate measure of success. But when a child is taught to value marks above all else, they risk losing the simple joy of learning. Their self-worth becomes tied to test results, leading them to believe that a letter or number determines their future.
St David’s College takes a different approach. This independent co-educational day and boarding school for children aged nine to 19 has, since its founding in 1965, committed to an educational philosophy that helps pupils unlock their full potential.
“What has remained unwavering is our commitment to seeing and celebrating every individual,” says Headmaster Mr. Andrew Russell. “From day one, the school has embraced a ‘whole person’ approach, recognising that success and personal growth come in many forms. That belief has always shaped our culture and remains our guiding light today.”

A truly holistic approach
Learning at St David’s is so much more than academics. It’s a place where the most able students thrive alongside those who have barriers to learning. Here, you are encouraged to go beyond your books and participate in sports, performing arts, music, design and technology, and more, to discover your hidden talents.
“Outdoor challenges, artistic expression, and team sports build confidence, creativity, resilience, and collaboration — all vital qualities for life,” says Mr. Russell. “When students face real challenges — whether it’s a mountain hike or a tough match — they learn to trust themselves, bounce back from setbacks, and grow stronger.”
And because the school welcomes students for who they are, not just their academic ability, excellence here looks different for everyone. That is why, in honour of its 60th anniversary, the school launched the 60th Anniversary Excellence Scholarships. From September 2025, 60 scholarships will be awarded over five years to celebrate success in academics, sports and athletics, music and performing arts, art and design, leadership in outdoor education, community leadership and service and overcoming barriers to learning.
There is a powerful message behind these scholarships: that who you are matters just as much as what you achieve.
“We realised that traditional measures of excellence — often limited to grades — didn’t fully capture the remarkable talents and achievements we see every day in our students,” says Mr. Russell. “Because excellence isn’t one-size-fits-all. We wanted to recognise the quiet leaders, the innovators, the compassionate, the resilient — those whose strengths might not always show up in exam results. By doing so, we hope to affirm that their gifts are just as valuable and world changing.”

Care that goes deeper than education
In this inclusive environment, there’s something else all students get: unwavering support. Teachers are dedicated to your success and well-being. Many are specially trained with a Certificate of Competence in the Management of Specific Learning Difficulties, CCM (SpLD), a postgraduate qualification for professionals who work with students with dyslexia, dyscalculia, and dyspraxia.
Here, the care students receive even extends to life after school. One example is its exclusive Driving Lessons Package for Sixth Form boarders that includes 10 fully-funded driving lessons with qualified local driving instructors.
This belief in the transformative power of a nurturing, inclusive education is what first brought Mr. Russell to St David’s. It’s what convinced him to send his three children here as well, trusting the school to give them the same experience he saw in so many others.
“I’ve gained a dual perspective,” he says. “I understand the hopes and concerns parents carry, and I also know firsthand the positive impact our school culture has on young people. It’s made me deeply empathetic and has strengthened my resolve to maintain an environment that truly supports and nurtures every student.”
Moving forward, Mr. Russell envisions a St David’s that continues to grow and inspire while staying true to its founding principles: valuing each unique individual, fostering an incredible community, and redefining what success really means.
“I’d love to see our impact grow — not just within our walls, but in the lives our students go on to lead. If we can keep nurturing curious, compassionate, confident young people, I believe the next 60 years will be even more extraordinary,” he says.
