Students of the Bouvé College of Health Sciences returned to Northeastern University with peace of mind thanks to a comprehensive plan and protocols designed to keep students, faculty, staff and community members safe during the pandemic. For one, the university is committed to carrying out wide-scale COVID-19 testing throughout the 2020/21 academic year. Students, faculty and staff are tested regularly, with their health monitored daily as the university carries out a strategic phased return to the Boston campus.

Every worry or query is addressed at the university’s online COVID-19 hub, where you’ll find guidelines for academic matters, labs, residence halls and social distancing measures. For health science students at Bouvé College, this is also a real-time learning experience on pandemic management.

With more than 25 graduate programs, the Bouvé College of Health Sciences offers students extraordinary opportunities in three preeminent schools: Health Professions, Nursing, and Pharmacy. Programs are focused on reducing the gap between science and practice, with faculty in tune with real-world applications – bringing a unique vision to healthcare. Let’s take a closer look at two areas in which you can specialize.

Pharmaceutical Science

Offering four Master of Science and a Doctor of Philosophy degrees, the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences is home to future changemakers in drug discovery, development, evaluation, and delivery. Each program broadens biomedical science perspectives for both those entering, as well as those currently employed in the field, including research technicians, clinical laboratory workers, educators, and administrators.

You can choose to do a two-year MS in Biomedical Sciences, Medicinal Chemistry, Pharmaceutical Sciences, or Pharmacology. Then, you can specialize in pharmacology, medicinal chemistry, pharmaceutics, nanotechnology, neurosciences, pharmacokinetics, toxicology, imaging, or immunology. Each of these master’s programs places you firmly on the pathway to a PhD or working with big pharma/biotech research and development.

Students are privy to in-depth research experiences at Northeastern University’s five Centers of Research Excellence, which specialize in drug discovery, nanomedicine, biotechnology, cancer research, translational neuroimaging, and conditions related to inflammation. Bouvé College receives the most National Institutes of Health funding among all private pharmacy schools in the US, which translates to greater access to opportunities and resources for students.

Counseling Psychology

Aspiring for a career as a mental health counselor? You can embark on the next step of your journey at Bouvé College, where you can obtain a Master of Science, Certificate of Advanced Graduate Study in Counselling Psychology from the Department of Applied Psychology.

Every person is a multifaceted being. In this master’s program, you can explore the intricacies of human nature and learn about the influence of socioeconomic factors on a person, which will train you to take an ecological approach to counseling.

Students will cultivate an interdisciplinary perspective to research and clinical work with concentrations in health psychology, forensic counseling, early intervention, child and adolescent psychology, as well as cultural, gender, and political psychology. You will also begin carrying out urban, preventative, and community-based interventions in the program, preparing you to step into your career as soon as you graduate. This will be complemented by experiential placement with one of the college’s esteemed partners, including Boston Children’s Hospital, McLean Hospital, UMass Memorial Medical Center and Harbor Health Services.

Besides practical clinical experience, students can also expect to engage in immersive research and counseling training. This includes 100 hours of practicum for an introduction to mental health, plus a 600-hour internship where you can refine your counseling and clinical skills. By the end of this in-depth course, you would have the necessary experience to meet the licensing requirements for Massachusetts and most other jurisdictions in the US.
