Shanghai Community International School: Global community, caring teachers

Shanghai Community International School (SCIS) graduates enter universities as international as the experience they get at their full International Baccalaureate (IB) continuum school. Think of the likes of University College London (UCL), the University of Cambridge, Purdue University, Pennsylvania State University, and more. But wherever they end up, they carry with them a life’s worth of memories made at SCIS – the kind that shape children into lifelong learners who see every opportunity as a chance to grow.

For several decades, SCIS has done just that. Since 1996, SCIS has been one of Shanghai’s leading international schools, providing education to children from nursery through Grade 12. What started as a single building in the heart of the Changning district is now a colourful, vibrant community of over 1,800 students on three campuses. Educators, students, and parents represent over 60 nationalities and are fluent in 35 languages.

This multicultural milieu is further enhanced by its IB programme. SCIS is one of the first international schools in Shanghai to become fully authorised as an IB Continuum World School. The IB is the world’s foremost curriculum for global citizenship.

At SCIS, teachers and staff make the most of this prestigious programme by pairing it with nurturing environment. This combination encourages students to find their voices, pursue their passions, and become the confident, capable young adults they’re meant to be.

“We are happy to be at SCIS, and we trust that it’s the right environment,” notes the Akyazici family. “You have the freedom to explore yourself, develop your personality, and get to be a part of a community.”

Carol, who graduated in 2021 and went on to study economics at the University of Toronto, still remembers how welcoming and caring her SCIS class was. “We had a very diverse group of kids here, and so it really helped me broaden my scope and understanding of different cultures, and how to interact with different people. These are life skills that I’ll be taking along with me,” she says.

Teachers who go above and beyond

Here, students become lifelong learners with inquiring minds and a thirst for knowledge. With dedicated teachers at the helm, each student receives the keen attention they need to thrive and be the best they can be. With intentionally maintained small class sizes, SCIS empowers your child by encouraging them to customise their learning.

“One of the things I realised when I went to university is that it can be hard to connect with your professors, especially if they have hundreds of students,” says Morris, who is pursuing biochemistry at UCL. “One of the things I do miss at SCIS is being able to talk to your teachers and have very direct support from them.”

SCIS teachers are committed to providing the best possible instruction and guidance, within and beyond the classroom. Instead of imposing one-size-fits-all measures, they take time to understand abilities, interests and goals and are mindful of cultural backgrounds and prior learning experiences.

“Teachers don’t bite, and I think that’s very important. You realise that they’re more like mentors to you,” says Gabriel, who graduated from SCIS in 2021 and is now at the University of Chicago. “It’s important that you sort of foster a good connection with them because they put in a lot of effort, and it’s nice to have the reciprocation back.”

It’s with this approach that students here gain the confidence to strive for their future, whether it’s in healthcare, technology, arts, or public service. Ruhan, another graduate pursuing computer science at Penn State, attributed his choice of major to his teachers at SCIS. “Teachers encourage children to think analytically and go into depth when it comes to a topic, rather than the quantity of what they’re learning,” he shares. “That’s what sparked my interest in technology because they encouraged me to pursue it.”

Thanks to this personalised, all-encompassing education, students are empowered and ready to succeed in life. Learn more about the school’s offerings, arrange a visit to tour their expansive facilities and book a discussion tailored to your child’s needs.
