Roedean School: The success-sparking power of an all-girls education

Empower, Encourage, Engage.

The world’s best all-girls boarding schools are home to an education of this quality. These words are but a few that describe a life-shaping experience that prepares young girls for life at university and beyond. Data supports this. This study finds that 80% of girls school graduates consider their academic performance to be highly successful. Other studies find they develop greater self-confidence and broader interests, are six times more likely to consider majoring in math, science, and technology, and receive more positive academic and behavioural interactions than their coed peers.

Roedean School, an all-girls day and boarding school in Sussex, England, continues to prove these findings true.

This year, the Class of 2024 achieved exceptional A Level results; 57.2% of all grades are at A*-A, one of the highest in the last 15 years. More than four in five (82%) of the year group achieved at least one A grade. Six students scored all A*. These figures are even more resounding as the cohort is the largest in a decade, a result of more families realising the potential of an all-girls education.

Choice matters too. More than half (56%) of the school’s most recent year group took Mathematics for their A Levels, and one-third of the cohort chose Biology and Chemistry. Many of these graduates are moving on to undergraduate courses in STEM subjects, with a sizable percentage going into medicine for university. There are also those joining prestigious institutions such as the University of Oxford, University of Cambridge, Columbia University, and more, no doubt following in the footsteps of their seniors – the 2023 cohort received offers from equally top-ranked universities as well.

“I am very happy with my results. I would like to thank all of my teachers for their endless support throughout the application process and my academic journey at Roedean – I would not be able to achieve these grades without their help and encouragement,” said an A Level student who has recently graduated.

Such achievements have won other recognition. In 2024, the school topped the Brilliant Boarding School category in the Muddy Stilettos School Awards, winning over an expert panel of judges. Roedean is also a 2024s finalist in the Independent Boarding School of the Year.

How Roedean School champions its all-girls education

What’s the school’s secret to success? History may explain the present.

The day and boarding school was established in 1885, with the goal of championing a holistic education for young girls aged 11 to 18. Until today, it remains faithful to its promise of providing a thorough physical, intellectual and moral education.

You see this clearly in how the school balances academics, co-curricular activities, and pastoral care. While academics are important, the school places equal emphasis on personal development; girls here learn to seek high academic and personal standards, as established in the school’s founding ethos.

Grades are not always the end goal – the true value of the school’s all-girl education lies in teaching students to think deeply, critically, and spontaneously, and to always challenge and question what they’re learning. They do all this and more in an environment free from gender stereotypes, where they can pursue individual passions without limitations.

In small class sizes, they work with specialist teachers and their full attention, personalised attention. At all ages, these teachers ensure girls here develop a natural love for learning and stimulate their intellectual curiosity.

Individual passions are further nurtured by over 140 co-curricular activities available at Roedean. There are clubs, societies, and activities for every interest – examples include the Wild Fridays programme where Year 7s can explore activities in a natural environment and the Roedean Diploma where students develop creativity, leadership and social responsibility. Regardless of choice, girls develop existing talents, find new ones and build a portfolio of memories and experiences. All this and more take place within the school, its expansive facilities, and beyond – the vast 45-acre campus is just a few minutes away from Brighton, known as Britain’s best seaside city for its picturesque, bohemian coastal setting.

Perhaps the best part is the Roedean boarding experience. Pastoral care is ultimately at the heart of the school’s work, and it does it well. Students have round-the-clock support from a large team of dedicated staff, including staff who hold Mental Health First Aider qualifications and all are trained to the highest safeguarding standard. Not only do students have a nurturing environment to grow, they do it alongside their peers from far and wide – the boarding school is home to girls from over 40 countries. What better way to hone cross-cultural competence, a crucial skill in hot demand by employers in an increasingly globalised world? Little wonder why so many students leave Roedean transformed into highly motivated, confident, capable and responsible young women.
